About National Institute of Technology - NIT Kurukshetra

National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra (NITK), also known as NIT Kurukshetra is a Public Technical University wholly funded by Government of India. It was established in the year 1963, Vide letter No. 16-4/60-T.5, dated the 26th February, 1962 from the Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs, New Delhi. It was established as a joint and cooperative enterprise of Govt. of India and the State Government of Haryana to serve the State of Haryana and the rest of the country for imparting technical training to youth and for fostering national integration. It was known as Regional Engineering College then. Vide letter No. F.9-10/2002-U.3 dated 26.6.2002 the Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi  upgraded the REC Kurukshetra to National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra with the status of Deemed University w.e.f. 26.6.2002. The NIT Kurukshetra has also been registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 9th  April, 2003. In the session 2006-07, the Institute introduced a two-year MBA programme and two four-year B. Tech. degree programmes in Information Technology and Industrial Engineering Management. From the session 2007-08, the Institute started a three-year MCA programme. Each of these newly introduced courses has intake of 60 students. In addition to providing instructions in various disciplines of Engineering and Technology at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, the Institute offers excellent facilities for advanced research in the emerging areas of Science and Technology. The Campus extends over an area of 300 acres. The Education System of the Institute is divided into academic sessions comprising of two semesters – Even and Odd semester. The Institute offers courses of study leading to B.Tech. and M.Tech. degree and research facilities leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The medium of instructions and examination is English.

Location - The Institute campus is located at about 10 kms. from Pipli, a well known road junction on the Sher Shah Suri Marg and about 5 kms. from Kurukshetra Railway station. Click here for Google Map Location.

- Kurukshetra is a railway junction on the Delhi-Karnal-Ambala section of the Northern Railway.  It is about 160 kms. from Delhi.

Facilities

Hostel - The Institute has 9 Boys Hostels & 3 Girl Hostels. Hostel Accommodation will be provided subject to availability of the same. Five boys Hostels with a capacity of 250 each are for B.Tech students and One 150 seater post graduate Hostel, accommodates M.Tech. students and research scholars. Three of the Five boys' Hostels for undergraduate students have triple seater rooms whereas the remaining two are single seaters. All the rooms in Post-graduate Hostel are single seaters. The two girls Hostels have total capacity (150 + 200) to accommodate 350 girl students. These Hostels have single, double and triple seated rooms. All the rooms in the Hostels have been provided with furniture and ceiling fans.  Each Hostel is a self contained unit with its own co-operative mess and common room.  Common room facilities include newspapers, magazines, indoor games and a colour television set. In each Hostel i-net centres have been opened where residents can avail internet facilities free of cost.

Library  - The Institute has a Central Library as well as Department Libraries. The Library consists of 132636 records of books, over 153 print & approximately 3000 online journals, video Library service, online Library service. The Institute has a strong Book Bank/SAF collection, which caters to the needs of all the students for all the semesters including MBA & MCA. SC/ST students are given priority for issue of books. They are given 8 books for a semester without any charges. General category students are given 5 books for a semester without any fee and they can get five additional books against payment of Rs.30/- per book for a full semester.The facility of Book Bank is also extended to M.Tech. students. They can get the books issued for full semester against payment of Rs.30/- per book. Library is providing automated services in all sections of the Library using LIBSYS Software. Database of the Library is updated regularly and Readers can search the documents using Web-OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). The NITK Library is a core member of Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology (INDEST) Consortium set up by MHRD. Approximately 3000 e-resources are subscribed/provided through the Consortium.

CCN - Centre of Computing and Networking is housed in a separate building. The Centre is well equipped with the latest machines viz. Sun Servers, Pentium machines (P-IV, core2Duo and AMD), etc. A heterogeneous Intranet Network of around 1100 nodes under different OS like Sun Solaris, Linux, Windows and Novell Netware is set-up and maintained by the CCN. The Centre has dedicated 2 Mbps leased line from BSNL and 8 Mbps leased line from Reliance Communication. Installation of 8 Mbps leased line circuit from Reliance communications is underway. It provides Internet facilities to the users in the CCN (round the clock), all departments,  Central Library, faculty rooms and offices. The same facility has also been extended to student Hostels, Guest House, Sports Complex, Health centre etc.  Process of providing facility in the rooms of students, faculty and staff residences through optical fibre backbone and managed wireless has been initiated.

Central Workshop - Central Workshop imparts training to all the first and second semester students and the students of the third and fourth semester in the Mechanical Engineering discipline. The third year students are given projects involving work in the shops and the fourth year students undergo specialized training in the manufacturing processes. The Final Year and Post-Graduate students in the discipline utilizes the facilities of the central workshop in connection with their project and dissertation work. Facilities exist for the manufacture of components, parts and repair work.

The Central Workshop comprises of the following fully equipped Shops:

  • Pattern Making Shop.
  • Foundry Shop.
  • Welding Shop.
  • Electrical Shop.

Honours and Awards - Undergraduate students of B.Tech. Degree Course are eligible for a number of Honours, Awards, Scholarship and other financial assistance based on their academic performance, means, requirements etc.

Various Honours and Awards:

University Medal and Merit Certificates for Toppers - The students of Undergraduate Course of B.Tech. Degree Course who obtain the highest marks in the final year examination, passing all the semesters in the first attempt are eligible for the award of these University and Merit certificate medals.

Award for Technical Working Model - An award of Rs. 50001- has been instituted from the year 1989-90 for the best technical working model of the year. All students of the Institute are eligible to complete.

Medals - Gold Medal along with a cash award of Rs. 5,000/- for the students who secure 1st position in the final examination in the above mentioned disciplines of NIT Kurukshetra.

Technical Festivals
- NITK organises a national level technical fest named Literati evey year, drawing huge number of participants from colleges all over the country. Also every departmental society organises its technical fest named as Alchemia, Magnum Opus, Powerfest, Phoenix etc.

TEQIP - The Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP), funded by the World Bank, aims to up-scale the on going initiatives of GOI to enhance efficiency and dynamism in technical education.  It was launched by MHRD as a Rs. 1339 crore programme during the 10th plan.  Haryana is one of the six states which had been selected to participate in the first cycle of the first phase of the programme, based on their commitment and preparedness for the project. The agreements were signed in February 2003 between GOI, the six participating states and the World Bank.

Hospital - The Institute has a Health Centre and all students are provided medical aid at this centre within the available resources. The Health Centre has a Senior Medical Officer, a Lady Medical Officer and supporting staff. Health Centre is equipped with X-ray machine, E.C.G. machine and good laboratory for routine tests. Serious medical cases are sent to the LNJP (Civil) Hospital in Kurukshetra. Whenever a student falls ill, he/she should report and seek advice/medical aid from the SMO/LMO without delay. Students are advised not to seek treatment from unauthorized medical practitioners. Students are advised to approach LNJP (Govt. Civil Hospital) in case of Emergency. Students are advised to bring Mosquito Net and the Mosquito repellent to prevent themselves from malaria fever. Students should maintain cleanliness and proper hygienic atmosphere in their surroundings.

Bank & Post Office - To facilitate all financial transactions, a fully computerized branch of the State Bank of India functions in the Institute premises. For the convenience of the students a Post-Office is operating in Hostel No. 3. It provides Saving Bank facility plus provisions for Money Orders, Postal Orders, Postage, etc.  

Shopping Centre - The Institute has a Shopping Centre equipped with all the basic commodities for the residents of the Campus as well as for the Hostel students.       

Sports
- Extensive and well laid out fields for sports and games are available on the campus. Badminton courts, tennis courts, cricket pitch, hockey ground, football ground, volleyball court with lights and basketball court with lights, Kabaddi ground and a stadium etc. are some of the facilities available to the students. Gymnasium centre has been provided for health upkeep of students and staff members. It is fitted with the latest and state-of-the-art equipments for different physical exercises.  To keep the engineering students physically fit, the physical education and sports is introduced as compulsory subject for engineering student in 1st & 2nd Semester with One Credit from 2006-07.

Guest House - The Institute has a well-furnished Guest House with all the necessary facilities.

Institute-Industry Collaboration -  ECE Department has an MOU with Hewlett Packard India Software Operation Pvt. Limited, 29 Cunningnam Road, Bangalore-52. Under this MOU, B.Tech final year students are allocated live Projects from Hewlett Packard and jointly monitored by their faculty and those from NIT Kurukshetra. The Institute offers consultancy services on the design and development problems referred to it by various Govt. and other Industrial Organizations.

Placement and Training - Arrangements for Pre-Placements talks, written tests, interviews, group discussions, etc are all handled by the staff at the office. The Placement policies and other related activities are handled by the Placement Advisory Committee (PAC) of final year students from different branches under the guidance of Professor in-Charge, Training and Placement. Mandatory two months training/internship in an industry relevant to the subject majoring in, to give a practical knowledge of the same.

Alumni Association - The Alumni Association keeps organising various meets to unite old batch-mates and provide them a platform to share their success.
