Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak was established through an Act of the Legislative Assembly of Haryana in the year 1976 with a specific objective - "To establish and incorporate a teaching-cum-affiliating University at Rohtak for the encouragement of interdisciplinary higher education and research with special emphasis on studies of Life Sciences and Environmental and Ecological Sciences". During the last 26 years of its existence, the University has achieved a remarkable degree of success in its expansion programmes, infrastructural developments and academic excellence. It is named after the great social reformer and founder of Arya Samaj, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, who was a man ahead of his times.

Moving from the limited original objective of studies in Life Sciences, the University today functions under 13 faculties with 27 post-graduate departments on the campus running 77 academic programmes. There are 66 Boards of Studies for developing and designing courses in different disciplines. Besides the main campus, there are 2 satellite campuses - Regional Centre running post-graduate teaching at Rewari and National Law College at Gurgaon.

As an affiliating University, it has 126 institutions and colleges under its control with an enrolment of about 1.70 lacs students. Among the premier professional institutions, we have the prestigious Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences at Rohtak with 986 bedded hospital, Medical College and Post Graduate MD/MS Medical studies in 21 disciplines, 9 P.G. Diplomas & a Medical College at Agroha apart from a Dental College at Rohtak.

Among affiliated institutes, the University has a number of Engineering Colleges, Computer and Management Studies institutes, Pharmaceutical Colleges etc. On-Campus, we have a Directorate of Distance Education with an enrolment of 45000 students for 24 professional and non-professional courses. The University has established six Chairs to conduct research on the lives and contributions of some eminent Indians.

Location - Maharshi Dayanand University is Situated at a distance of 70 km Northwest of Delhi on National Highway No. 10, It is spread over a sprawling 740 acres of land on the outskirts of the historic city of Rohtak.

Facilities

Hostels - Various hostels of the university are Satluj Hostel Ganga Hostel Nivedita Working Women Hostel Saraswati Hostel. Facilities like Newspapers & Magazines, Television & Cable facilities, Gas Facilities in Mess, Water Coolers in Summer, Geysers in the bathrooms in the winter, Indoor & Outdoor Games, Canteen facilities, S.T.D. The facility, Computers Facility, Inverter Facility, Water Purifies for Coolers and Visit of Health Centre Doctor once in a week are provided.

Library - The Library on a University campus forms the nucleus of all academic activities. Maharshi Dayanand. University Library offers excellent facilities with a seating capacity of 650 readers at a time and 24 cubicles for University teachers and researchers. Equipped with nearly 2 Lac documents, 600 Indian and foreign journals, 3 reading halls, 2 seminar halls, and a spacious Committee Room, it is rightfully the hub of all academic activities. In the process of modernising, the functioning of the library is computerized. Various services like Library biographic services, reprographic services, inter-library loan facilities, Xerox facility, and E-mail and Internet facilities are made available to the users of the library.

University Centre For Competitive Examinations - The University Centre for Competitive Examinations (UCCE) has been providing guidance / Coaching to the students. The Students competing for various examinations Viz Indian Civil Services (Preliminary), Haryana Civil Services, Bank Probationary Officer, Inspectors of Income Tax and Central Excise, National Eligibility Test (NET) Combined Defence Services (CDS) National Defence Academy (NDA), CEET / Engineering, PMT, Remedial Coaching in English etc. For all kinds of coaching classes, a nominal token fee is charged from the students belonging to Open Category and the SC / ST candidates are not charged any fee for attending coaching classes. The Centre has a rich reference library which contains more than 4000 books, seven national Newspapers, Journals, Magazines and other useful study material.

Computer Centre - The Computer Centre is a central computing facility of the university and offers a computer laboratory facility to university teaching departments. It aims at creating computer awareness among university officials, teachers and research scholars through short-term training courses, to facilitate the analysis of research data of Research Scholars of the University Teaching Departments and develop software for office automation of various Branches of the University.

University Health Centre - Medical consultation to Employees of M.D. University, Rohtak. Medical Consultation investigations and dispensing of medicines for students.

Department Of Students Welfare - The University has an efficient department designed for the welfare of the students of the University located in the south block of the newly constructed University Auditorium. The department organizes various activities of every stream of Art, Culture and Adventure and the Calendar of Activities of the department during a session is the largest one amongst Indian Universities. From this session well designed and modular furnished Common Rooms for boys and girls separately are being prepared with the facilities of newspapers, magazines, indoor games and a pantry. The department shares the expenditure of educational tours organized by various departments. The bus and railway pass facilities are being provided to the bona fide students of UTD.

A large number of camps and adventure courses like Trekking, Youth Leadership Training Camps, Rock Climbing, Snow Skiing, Value-based Spiritual Course, Personality Development Camp etc. are being organized for the bonafide students of University. Six Zonal Youth Festivals and one Inter-Zonal Youth Festival consisting of 37 events of Music, Dance, Theatre, Literary, Fine Arts and Sanskrit events are being organized during a session. Along with this various programmes of financial aid to the students are with the department like Student Aid Fund, Dr Radha Krishnan Fund, Cultural Stipend etc. For the development of sports activities on the campus, there is a Unit of Sports persons which cares for the various sports contests during a year under the supervision of the Campus Sports Committee. Besides this, the Department sponsors the teams and individuals for participation in the various contests and events organized by other Universities in India.
