Indian Maritime University (IMU) has been established as a Central University by the Government of India under an Act of Parliament, namely, the Indian Maritime University Act 2008. The Act was brought into force on 14th November 2008 and notified in the Gazette of India. The Indian Maritime University, being the first of its kind in the country caters to the educational requirement of the maritime fraternity. It is a teaching and affiliating University which offers degree, post graduate degree and research programmes in all disciplines of maritime sector. It also includes areas include traffic operations, finance, engineering, human resource management, general management,computer applications etc. The University headquarters at Chennai is built up in an area of about 106 acres out of 300 acres of land at Semmancherry village which lies in between East Coast Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai (IT Express Way).

1. National Maritime Academy, Chennai - National Maritime Academy campus is located on a 20 acre scenic beach front property on the outskirts of Chennai, a bustling cosmopolitan city. The sprawling campus houses the academic block, hostel, residential and recreational facilities. It is credited with ISO 9001:2000 Certification and accredited as grade 1 rating by ICRA. It has modern facilities to conduct training programmes for both port and marine personnel.

2. T S Chanakya, Mumbai - Training Ship Chanakya, the shore based successor to the Training Ship Rajendra (1972-1993) & Training Ship Dufferin (1927-1972), is situated off Palm beach road in an area of about 40 acres. The campus spreads across North-South, parallel to Palm Beach high way at Navi Mumbai.

3. Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Mumbai - The college is housed in a modern seven-storied building situated on a six-acre site at Hay Bunder and its two adjacent hostel blocks overlook the picturesque harbour of Mumbai with its islands and the mainland to the east. LBS is one of the largest marine training institutions in the world, with over 1200 students, offering 46 post-sea courses which run almost concurrently. The courses meet the standards of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as well as those of the Government of India. The college is fully equipped to meet the requirement of marine officers afloat and ashore. About 70% of Indian officers afloat are employed on foreign flag ships, as a result of the high quality of education and the subsequent high level of professionalism and competency maintained by LBS.

4. Marine Engineering Research Institute, Mumbai - Marine Engineering and Research Institute (M.E.R.I.) formerly known as Directorate of Marine Engineering and Training. The main aim and commitment of D.M.E.T. was to prepare young cadets into fine marine engineers by imparting paramilitary type training with academics and marine workshop training.

5. Marine Engineering Research Institute, Kolkata - The Institution earlier named as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training had its headquarters in Calcutta and a branch at Bombay, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). The Institute has been renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1994. MERI was a dream project of a new India as it was expanding its horizon in the maritime field, starting with an initial intake of 60 cadets, today about 300 young highly motivated Engineers are passing through her hallowed portals.

6. Indian Institute of Port Management, Kolkata - It offers training for port & Marine personnel & undertakes projects. Port wing conducts training programmes on various areas of Port Operation and Management. The Marine wing conducts post sea modular & competency courses for maritime personnel. The project wing undertakes consultancy and research works in the maritime field. IMU also offers marine courses for Merchant Navy Personal. The Institute offers one year PG Diploma Courses on three different subjects in collaboration with Netaji Subhas Open University. The Institute has highly experienced faculty, simulators, training vessel and class rooms for conducting various programmes.

7. National Ship Design & Research Centre, Visakhapatnam - NSDRC promote & develop design & research activities for shipping & shipbuilding, improve efficiency and productivity of shipbuilding and shipping sectors, assimilate knowledge with reference to advancement in maritime technology in the world & dissemination thereof to elevate the Indian Maritime Sector to keep it abreast with international standard.

8. IMU School of Business - It is also known as School of Maritime Management. The faculty for the programme are with expertise in various disciplines viz. Logistics, Port and Terminal Management, Finance, Law, Communications, Strategic Management, Managerial Economics etc. Teaching methods of lectures with case studies, Group Discussions, Projects etc. are used to sharpen students skills. Corporate network cell (CNC) provides the link between B-School and corporate world. The CNC is run by the Students of MBA with faculty in supportive role for all major cell activities. The Major objective is to help students find appropriate placements in relevant Industries/Organizations and simultaneously help in propagating the Brand Value of the B. School. Hostel - The Hostel accommodation is subject to availability. Allotment of hostel will be on first-come first serve basis and preference will be given to those who pay the course fee and hostel fee in advance. The hostel fees includes bed tea, breakfast and dinner. Check in/ out is 10.00 hours. Hostel Fees for Modular Courses is Rs.200/- per day per participant. Hostel Fees for Competency Courses is to paid in the following order - The participants should pay at least one month hostel fee of Rs.4,000/- in advance. Payment for subsequent month(s) shall be paid one week before commencement of the new month. Participants staying in the Hostel after completion of the course will have to pay four times of the normal rent. Participants shall not be allowed to stay in hostel if hostel fee is not paid. Course fee / Hostel fee and any other fees once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.
Library Facility - The Institute has a library with a good collection of magazines and books. A candidate on enrolment will be entitled to use the library facilities and is governed by the rules of the library.
Consultancy & Research - Consultancy assignments on all areas of port management, operation, engineering, finance and projects for major ports, non-major ports, private companies and other organizations including Ministries under the Government of India are undertaken. Besides, undertaking studies on specific areas in maritime field. Research activities are carried out for the sponsoring organizations primarily in the fields of shipping and port management.
Competency Courses - The candidates are assessed by unit tests at periodical intervals to assess their understanding and competence for award of eligibility certificates, which will enable them to appear for the examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India.
Modular Courses - The candidates are evaluated by an examination conducted at the end of the course and those who are found successful are awarded certificates.
Re-Test - The candidates, who fail in the final internal assessment may be given retest as per the schedule. A candidate shall make a formal application in the requisite format (available at Marine Office) to enrol for the re-test and pay Rs.500/- per function/paper. The re-test will be conducted as per the schedule only.
Workshops - Students get hands-on training in the fully equipped machine shop and workshops for plumbing, electrical, pneumatic, fitting, hydraulics etc.
Laboratories - Laboratories for Chemistry, Physics & Navigation are available for training students.
Computer Laboratory - A computer lab with internet connectivity exposes students to various computer applications.
Counselling / Guidance - Weak candidates are given counselling for improvement.
Student Feedback - The Institute has a system of obtaining feedback from the participants about the course content, facilities, coverage, the faculty and suggestion if any.
Grievance Redressal - The Institute has a system of redressal for the grievances of candidates regarding conduct of courses facilities etc. including revaluation of their answer script or reappear for examination in any particular subject.
Medical Facility - The IMU clinic provides free first aid to all participants and in an emergency/special cases, reference is made to the hospital at participant’s cost.
Insurance - The participants are covered under a group insurance scheme. However, the institute is not responsible for any injury or damage due to accident, suffered by any participant during their stay at IMU campus.
