About Periyar University

Periyar University was established by the Act 45 of Government of Tami Nadu in 1997. The University is named after a renowned social reformer popularly known as 'Thanthai Periyar'. The origin of the University lies in the etsablishment of 3 Departments (Commerce, Geology and Mathematics) of Postgraduate extension centre of Madras University functioning at Salem during late 1990's. The University Grants Commissions, New Delhi bestowed the 2f status on 09.10.1998 and 12(B) status on 17.05.2005 to the Periyar University. Location - The University is situated on the Bangalore National Highways (NH - 47), 10kms from the Salem city and easily connected by road.The University campus extends to about 100 acres accommodating the administrative and Department buildings. Click here for - Google Map Location.

Transportation - The road on Bangalore National Highway is well connected with Trichy, Madurai, Hosur, Bangalore. By train it is nearest to junction and can be reached within 10 minutes of timings.

Examinations

Periyar University conducts regular Examinations during the months of Nov-Dec and April-May of every year. Non-Semester pattern is adopted for the courses offered through Distance Education except a few courses. The University follows single valuation for the UG and double valuation system for PG and M.Phil degrees. If the difference of marks between first and the second evaluation is more than 10 marks, the paper is referred to a third examiner and will be final.

Facilities

Library - The Periyar University Library has a collection of 17434 books worth of Rs.4757543 and 116 National and International Journals on various subjects. Library being the nerve centre of higher education, it is proposed to go for automation and digitalization.

PRIDE - The Periyar Institute of Distance Education offers various Job-Oriented Degree, Diploma and Certificate Courses in India and abroad. The Directorate for Distance Education of the University provides various U.G., P.G., Diplomas, Certificate Courses, Professional Courses in various disciplines like Tamil, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, History, Political Science etc.


Research Programmes - The Departments of Studies and Research of the University are implementing various research programs sponsored by the prestigious funding agencies of our countries like DST, CSIR, DRDO, UGC, ICMR, etc.

Sports - Under the Department of Physical Education Sports activities are promoted . Students are encouraged to participate in various national sports events. The University boys and girls won Silver and Bronze medals in Power lifting, Kabaddi, Athletics and Fencing events during 2004-2005. In High-Jump event, the University students won Gold medal. Periyar University organised South West Zone Inter-University and All India Inter-University Kho-Kho Tournament for Men 2005-2006 from 20-02-2006 to 28-02-2006. Sixty four Universities from all over India participated in this tournament.

NSS - National Service Scheme has 110 Units in 35 colleges with 11,000 volunteers. NSS volunteers are involved in literacy programmes, health and hygiene, community services, village re-construction, mass tree planting, environmental protection and social awareness programmes. Under NSS Special Camping programmes, so far, 110 villages have been adopted by the NSS units of various Colleges and the villages were given awareness programmes about Health and Hygiene, the importance of girl child education, women development, self help group, skill development, etc. Communal harmony has been spread in villages. Various Government Welfare Programmes are being made known to the poor villagers and helped to seek government help.

Youth Red Cross Society - Periyar University has Youth Red Cross Society (YRC) units in 33 Arts and Science Colleges affiliated to Periyar University and 24 Polytechnic Colleges within Periyar University area. The YRC volunteers are involved in "Organizing Blood Donation Camps", "Aids Awareness Campaign", "First-Aid Training Programmes" and other health and family welfare related programmes. Periyar University has brought out a "Blood Donors Directory" containing the name, address and blood group of the donors residing within Periyar University area for the benefit of needy patients. In continuation, Periyar University also brought out a "Blood Donors Directory- Vol-II" with additional number of donors to help the society.

Red Ribbon Club - The Red Ribbon Club of Periyar University has been formed on 28-07-2005 to create awareness among the student youth in higher education about the motto of HIV/AIDS/STD. The Red Ribbon Club is the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu.

NCC - National Cadet Corps aims to develop the qualities of Character, Courage, Comradeship, Discipline, Leadership and Sportsmanship among the youth to make them useful citizen. With this aim the Tamil Nadu Directorate of NCC started 6 Groups. Periyar University belongs to the Coimbatore Group. There are 10 Army Units and 2 Air Wing units in 10 Colleges with 1200 volunteers. NCC volunteers are involved in several social awareness programmes such as adult education, anti dowry drive, anti malaria drive, national integration, environment conservation and wild life.

Achievements

  • The NSS Volunteers of Periyar University won National recognition for outstanding services. Thiru. P. Gnanasekaran participated in the Republic Day Parade held at New Delhi on 26th January 2005. Thiru. D.K. Paranitharan won the Best NSS Volunteer State Award on 24.09.2004.
  • Tsunami hit victims in Tamil Nadu's district of Nagapattinam were helped by University, which sent a team of volunteers to render relief service to the victims of Tsunami. The Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University presented Rs. 15.5 lakhs to the Chief Minister for the Tsunami Relief Operation of the State Government.
