About Alagappa University

Alagappa University came into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu on May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar, a great philanthropist and educationist founded this university. It is located at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu.

Infrastructure

The University has 15 Departments, 3 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 23 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University. The University offers education through Regular, Week-end, Distance and Collaborative modes. The Distance Education Directorate offers variety of programmes to the student community spread across the country and in selected foreign countries. Through all modes of education, the University caters to the needs of the student community of around 1,00,000.

Facilities and Campus

The 440 acre green and lush campus houses all the academic activities expected from a world class university.

Hostels Facilities - There are three hostels – two for men and one for women students of the University. The hostel rooms are well furnished and well ventilated. There is provision to accommodate around 500 students. The hostels have separate hygienic mess halls, a reading room supplemented with leading English and Tamil dailies, magazines and Employment News. There is enough space for undertaking Sports and Games activities. The mess is run by the student representatives and the expenses are divided equally. Nominal establishment charges are collected from the students to run the hostel.

Experienced faculty members are posted as Warden and Deputy Warden to look after the welfare of the students. Transport facility is made available to them to commute to the Departments. All the hostels are connected with telephone facilities. The recreation rooms are provided with TV and other facilities. Clean water is made available to the students with Aqua Guard filtering. Furnished hostel accommodation is made available to the students from other countries on priority basis. This gives them an opportunity to easily mingle with other students and adapt themselves to the local culture at the earliest.

Library - The Central Library of Alagappa University was declared open in July, 23, 1990 by Dr. K. Anbazhagan, the then Pro-Chancellor of the University. Housed in an independent, spacious and functionally convenient building, the Central library of Alagappa University has earned for itself a reputation for service among the academic community of Alagappa University (and also of neighbouring sister Universities ). The library has all the amenities expected of a University Library - an inviting exterior, Reading Halls, 3 tier stack rooms, Research cubicles, Rooms for Librarian, Library staff class room etc. Library has very rich collection of 64,000 carefully culled vols.

Apart from books, library is subscribing 121 periodicals, which includes 16 international journals and some are accessible in electronic form (full text) through World Wide Web. Further a good collection of Annual reports of Government, public and private sector organizations, technical reports, proceedings of conferences, etc. are also available in central library. The library is part of the UGC-INFONET e-journals, from which it is going to receive about 4300 academic and research titles from reputed publishers, societies etc and an Air-Conditioned Internet Browsing Centre with about 20 computers for free access.

Workshop-Cum-Instrumentation Center - The services of workshop-cum-instrumentation center are most essential to back the good quality teaching and research. In the absence of it, the quality of research may suffer in terms of delayed on outputs. In Alagappa University, we have a centralized workshop-cum-instrumentation center to cater for the needs of the Department of the faculty of Science viz., Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Crystal Growth, Biotechnology and Oceanography and Coastal area studies. Besides, these facilities are thrown open to help the science Departments of the 23 affiliated colleges.

Other Facilities

National Service Scheme - Alagappa University has been continuously in NSS since its inception with the major objective of providing ample opportunities to the youths to involve themselves in social activities and ultimately developing their personality. 4200 NSS volunteers from 21 affiliated colleges and university departments are actively participating in all NSS activities of Alagappa University. NSS takes strenuous efforts to inculcate in the minds of the students the voluntary participation in community service while they are studying in educational institutions.

Every year elocution and essay competitions are organized on personality development, leadership development and national integration to motivate students and to build leadership and communication abilities.A ten day special camp is organized every year. Developing infrastructure in the adopted village, leadership programme, tree planting, medical camp, programme on preserving water resources, voters awareness, free legal – aid awareness, women and children welfare are the important activities undertaken by students in the special camping programme. Students’ cultural programme forms part of special camping activities.

Health Care Center - The University has a Health Care Centre for early diagnosis of diseases and reference to speciality treatment, if needed. Compulsory general medical check up camps are organized for all the members of the University viz. the students, faculty and staff. Maintenance of health records is in practice which helps the users in times of emergency.

A team of student volunteers along with the Medical Officer went to the Tsunami affected areas and carried out relief work. A medical camp was organized at the affected site.Various educational institutions in and around Karaikudi viz. Alagappa Engineering College, Alagappa Arts College, Alagappa Polytechnic and Sree Sevugan Annamalai College, Devakottai utilize the services available at the Physiotherapy Clinic free of cost.

CRD - Centre for Rural Development was established in this University in April 2005 to initiate, motivate and strengthen the rural development activities for holistic development of rural areas.

Centre for Gandhian Studies - The Centre was established to carry out the activities centered on highlighting the contributions of Gandhiji towards the National Freedom, Non violence, Satyagraha, Trusteeship, Swedhesi and Women welfare in the country. Accordingly the Centre for Gandhian Studies carried out the activities to inculcate the Gandhian Philosophy in the minds of the student community

Sports Facilities - The Department of Physical Education trains students in various sports and games activities and enables them to participate in tournaments at various levels.

Employment Cell
- University has an Employment Cell and a Placement Officer. Apart from this, each department has Placement Coordinators to carry out the placement activities in an effective manner. Career Counseling is also done by the faculty members and class advisors after understanding the needs of the students. Preparation of placement brochures, identification of possible recruiters, coordination of placement activities are few of the activities of the University Placement Cell. Both off-campus and on-campus interviews are coordinated through this cell.

Canteen - A Canteen is functioning at the University campus for the benefit of the students, faculty and staff. It is run on contract basis. As it is located very close to the Distance Education Directorate, the students of DDE also make use of this facility.

Telecom Centre - An approved Telecom Centre is functioning at the University Campus. ISD / STD / Local calls can be made through this centre by all concerned.

Reprographic Facility
- For the benefit of the student community, a number of reprographic facilities are available in and around the campus.

Post Office - A full fledged Post Office – cum – Sorting Office is available just in front of the University. The Speed Post facility is also available at the post office.

Banking Facility - The salaries of the faculty and staff are distributed through the banks viz. Indian Bank and ICICI Bank. The students are supported while opening the bank accounts. They are available in the vicinity of the University Campus.

Co-Operative Stores - The stores is in operation to help the faculty and staff of the University. Soft loans are provided to the needy at the earliest possible time.

School - A Model School is available within the campus of the Alagappa University, which is used by the students of B.Ed. programme of the Alagappa University College of Education.

Extra Curricular Activities

Cultural Activities - Students have immense talents and skills. In order to bring out their innate talents, University formed a Choir and an Orchestra on 5.4.1988. From the year 1988 on wards, many cultural competitions, namely Dance, Group song, literary Events, Mono acting, Rangoli, Mimicri, Clay Modelling, Cartooning, Skit, Mime, one act play are held to bring out the talents and potentialities of students.

NAAC - Alagappa University is accredited with 'A' Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)

International Collaborations - The University is having International Collaborations with Universities / Institutions of Higher Learning in countries like China, Malaysia, West Indies, U.S.A. and South Korea. New innovative programmes suitable are designed and offered at the University (for the foreign students). Many exchange programmes attract the attention of the teachers and students from abroad.
