About St. Peter's Institute of Higher Education and Research

St. Peter's University or St. Peter's Institute of Higher Education and Research, is a Private Deemed University. The University is sponsored by St. Peter's Institute of Higher Education and Research Trust. It was earlier functioning as St. Peter's Engineering College which was established in the year 1992 and affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. It became Deemed-to-be University in 2008 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The University also offers distance education programmes which are recognised by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi. The campus of the university is spread over an area of 32.26 acres and is located at a distance of about half kilometre from Annannr suburban Railway station.

Location – The University is located 25 kms. west of Chennai in the jurisdiction of Avadi municipality. Avadi is well connected by road and railway.

Facilities at St. Peter’s University

Hostel Facilities - Separate hostels are available for boys and girls with 164 and 156 rooms respectively with the total building area of 17,000 sqms. Rooms are available for single, double, triple and quadruple accommodation with attached bathrooms. Kitchens are well equipped with modern steam cooking systems. Hostels are provided with reading rooms, TV rooms and recreation halls. A doctor visits the college/hostels on all days to render medical attention for the needy students.

Library - The University Library has about 66,046 Volumes of books and about 22,889 titles. The Library has about 2,407 books in the Book Bank section for SC/ST students. The Library also has Project Reports, Indian Standards and CD-ROMs. The Library subscribes 350 Online E-Journals from IEEE, ASME, ASCE, and DELNET and 104 hard copies of National and International Journals.

The University Library also offers various services to the users like - circulation services, web OPAC, reservation, inter library loan, internet services, reference services, online question bank, research alert and reprography services etc. The Library services are automated, and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) has been provided to the user to browse and retrieve the online information. Working hours of the Central Library and Department Libraries are from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

Internet – Internet connection is provided through optic fibre network to all PCs in the campus and is provided by BSNL.

Canteen – The canteen provides food and snacks to the students and the faculty. Day scholars can bring outside food and have it in the canteen.

Health Centre – A doctor is available to look after the health needs of the students. Four beds and equipments are available for providing first aid.

Transport – The institute has fleet of 23 buses which connect the commuters from different part of the city and some sub-urban area as well.

Medical Facility - Medical facility available with free medicines provided to sick students

Computer Centres – the university has two computer centres having about 397 clients for the students and the faculty.

SPEC Technology Business Incubator – It trains young graduates to become entrepreneurs. It also trains them to develop indigenous technologies. The incubator is facilitated with CNC Machine, Radial Drilling Machine, Rapid Prototyping Machine and CMM.

SPIHER MSME Business Incubator – It promotes emerging technological and knowledge based innovative ventures that seek the nurturing of ideas from professionals in a supportive environment.  Suitable grants are provided for potential projects for technology development and commercialization.

STD/PCO – The University has provided STD/PCO Booths to cater to the needs of the students and the faculty.

Seminar Halls – The institute has 3 fully furnished seminar halls, each of which can accommodate 300 people. It is facilitated with audio-visual systems.

Auditorium – A spacious auditorium which can accommodate 2000 persons is available at the University for organising various events.

Training and Placement – It arranges training programmes and organises placement drives for the students. Students are provided training on personality development and soft skills which help in building confidence of the students. Firms are invited and placement interviews are conducted on the campus.
