Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R and D Institute of Science and Technology has been established by VEL TECH group of Educational Institutions which was established in 1990 by a well known industrialist couple dedicated to public service, Dr. R. Rangarajan and Dr. R. Sakunthala Rangarajan, who by then had 30 years of experience in developing industries and international trade. Dr. R.Rangarajan is the founder chairman Vel Tech Rs Group founder and chancellor Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R and D Institute of Science and TechnologyVel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R and D Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai has established more than 25 courses in Engineering under various Faculties which includes more than 300 highly qualified and experienced teachers. VEL TECH also provides French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish Languages Courses. VEL TECH has been duly declared as Deemed to be University u/s 3 of the UGC Act 1956, F. 9-55/2004-U.3 (A) dated 15th October, 2008 by the UGC and notified by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

Dress Code

Every male student shall:

  1. Wear full or half sleeve shirt with all buttons and neck closed and shall not roll up the sleeves while wearing full arm shirt.
  2. Wear full gent’s pants with waist belt in place, shirt tucked in properly and securely zipped up.
  3. Wear clean socks and normal black shoes and appear clean shaven.
  4. No male students shall wear tight fitting shirt or pants or jeans, T shirts, banians or any other casual wear or cargoes or shirts with multi-pockets with any kind of Slogans, Writings, Wordings whatsoever on them.
  5. No male students shall wear any kind of pins pierced or tattoos in any part of the face or wear wrist bands except watch.

Every female student shall wear:

  1. Loose fitting salwar-kameez, churidar-dupata with 50mm tolerance. The dupata shall always be placed extending from shoulder tops to waist properly pinned on either side of shoulder tops;
  2. No female student shall wear tight fitting or transparent clothes or T shirts or Jeans or pants or high heel shoes or heavy make-up.
  3. Students may not exhibit gold jewellery and gold or costly watches.
  4. No student shall be allowed to enter any laboratory without laboratory coat or work shop khaki uniform or shoes.
  5. Students shall also be required to attend all functions with outside chief guest in college with Blazer uniform only as may be prescribed.

Tests and Examinations - There shall be 2 Cycle Tests in each Semester at the interval of 1 month and 2 Model Examinations at the end of the Semester.

Transportation

If you are travelling by air-

  • Disembark at Chennai Meenambakkam (Anna International/Kamaraj National )Airport. Hire a tax.
  •  Drive up to Avadi Railway Station - bus terminus junction.
  • From there take left drive straight 1 km up North. Reach Jagajivanram Statue, drive further up North 4 km, reach Vel Junction, take right 1 km to reach VEL TECH Central Junction, take left, drive 200 m. reach VEL TECH Arch Gate.

If you are travelling by road-

  • Public transport is available from all parts of Chennai Metro. Some bus routes are 120, 47D, A47, D70, 170D.
  • After reaching Avadi Bus Station, you may change over to Bus or auto-rickshaw or private transport system.
  • Public transport is available from Avadi to University premises. University buses are also operated at regular intervals from Avadi to the University premises.

Facilities

Smart Class Room - In a cyber practicum, the teachers can meet a variety of students - whoever signed up from anywhere around the world. Each student has his or her own account, and the teacher can develop lessons targeting each student's needs. The cyber practicum supervisors review the lessons and the teachers revise them to address their suggestions. The University has lectures developed by several senior professors and subject experts through NPTEL, archived lectures by professors from all Indian Institute of Technologies. The archived classroom sessions are presented to the students via the Video Portal, a Web-based component of the Digital Media System that allows students to quickly browse, search and view digital media interactively.

EDUSAT - College will make arrangements to provide recorded versions of the lectures telecast by EDUsat Programme of Anna University, in CDs on different subjects, for the benefit of the students. Students may play the CD at their convenience in their computers.

Hostels - There is separate accommodation for boys and girls. There are semi deluxe, deluxe (AC & non AC), super deluxe rooms with bath rooms facilities.

Library -  The Library has about 38742 books in the U.G. Library while there are 17495 books in the P.G. Library. Audio and Video facilities are provided in the Library  For the convenience of the student, the library has a photocopier and a book Bank facility (SC/ST students). Many Engineering Journals like the journal of the Institution of Engineers( India), IEEE Transactions journals, Microsoft System journal and advanced Journals in Engineering are available, Besides these, newspapers, magazines, career oriented publications, internet and e-journal facilities are also available.

Computing Facilities - The University has more than 3500 systems connected through wireless fidelity of high latent potential. Fibre optic connectivity ratio of 1:30 per band is maintained to support future extension and also to stream archived lecture videos for virtual classrooms. Surfing to maximum speed is achieved through a dedicated 22mbps connectivity from BSNL, STPI, SIFY and VSNL. System usability is not restricted to laboratories as every classroom has a wi-fi extension supporting more than 60 systems.

Mahatma Gandhi National Merit Scholarship

Scheme A - 100% Scholarships for top 3 B.Tech. Applicants from each state. The University will offer 100% scholarships to top three B.Tech. applicants from each State in India (subject to having secured a minimum of 60% average on the sum of the marks scored in maths, Physics & Chemistry in +2 examination) and to top applicant from each union territory of full exemption from tuition fees and free boarding and lodging for four years.

Scheme B - 50% scholarships for top 100 B.Tech. Applicants. The University will offer Scholarships to top 100 B.Tech. applicants of 50% concession in tuition fees for Academic Year 2010-11.

Scheme C - 50% VELTECH  Scholarships under Scheme partnership for top  B.Tech. Applicants. VEL TECH in partnership with other establishments / organizations will offer agreed number of scholarships in selected branches of undergraduate engineering programme for the Academic year 2010-11.

Scheme for MBA - 100% scholarship covering tuition fees to the top 3 rank holders admitted to MBA course through VTU All India Entrance Examination based on the entrance examination marks.

Scheme for M.E/ M.Tech - 100% Scholarship to those who had secured first 3 ranks in the University examinations in the Under Graduate programmes.

Transport Facilities - The University provide Bus Service to the students and staff.

Leave Coupons - Every student will be provided with 10 leave coupons. 8th, 9th and 10th coupons shall be in red colour, which should have the approval of the student’s parent/guardian. Every Student is eligible for a maximum of 9 days of condonation of attendance in a semester subject to production of medical certificate to the satisfaction of the Head of the Department. Such medical certificate with the HOD’s remarks shall be submitted to attendance cell within a week of such occurrence.

Auditorium and Seminar Halls - There are Auditoriums and Seminar halls for holding various activities of the University.

Canteen - The Canteen offers various snacks for the students and staff as well.

Medical Facilities - The University provides various medical facilities to all the students. It has it's own Hospital and emergency vans, if need arises.

Research - The University is all ready conducting Research in Feasibility study in Erection of Polythene Bags, Women Self Help workshop in technological Aids for entrepreneurs for women self help group, Analysis of Sub-synchronous Resonance and design controllers for Ramagundam Kadapa etc. with funding from various agencies like Central power Research Institute (CPRI), AICTE, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology etc.

Collaborations - The University has Exchange Programmes with Oklahoma State University. It also has Academic tie-ups with CIDC, MoU with Canadian Colleges through CIDC, Short Term Courses from Canadian Universities, Cambridge Business English Certificate, Faculty training by British Council, BEC Training Programme by University, Cambridge ESOL Exams etc.

Placement and Training - 188 Companies conducted their campus selection process in 227 days during 2007-08. Free Summer Training Camps with the support of corporates are organized annually. VEL TECH has emerged as the nodal centre for a recruitment drive for cluster of educational institutions located in this part of the state. On an average 480 Technology managers and company executives from all kinds of manufacturing and services industries, IT and ITES visit the campus annually to share their expertise and insight with the students. Students interact with practising managers in 1,274 industries,companies and service organizations through their project works and training every year. Plenty of Training Programmes are organized by the Training Department covering english speaking, foreign languages, personality development and other value added courses engaging external resources. Details of such programmes is available at the Training Centre, with HODs. Fees payable for each course may vary and will be notified in advance. However, the HOD reserves the right to deny such advanced /special training to those, who carry arrears of or more than 4 subjects in I year, 8 in II year and 12 in the III year.

Admission for Foreign Students - The University offers Non-Resident Indians (NRI) and Foreigners, admission to Engineering Programmes leading to 4-Year BE / B.Tech. Degrees and for Post-Graduate Programmes leading to award of M.E./M.Tech./MBA/MCA/M.Phil. and Ph.D. in various branches of study. Colloquium - VEL TECH MCA Dept) conducts National Level Technical Symposium in the name of Colloquium to bring innovate ideas among students by conducting various events like Web Designing, Paper presentation, Debugging, etc. It is a 1 day event and the winners of each events are awarded.
