About Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology

Sathyabama University was established under section (3) of the UGC Act, 1956 (A Christian Minority Institution) which was formerly known as Sathyabama Engineering College established By Jeppiaar Educational Trust in 1987. It is a pioneer institute imparting knowledge in the areas of engineering, science, technology and education. The institution's progress and contribution in the field of technical education for over two decades made the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India to grant Deemed University status on 16 July 2001 and University  status on 13 September 2006 under section(3) of the UGC Act, 1956. The University offers courses in 24 branches of Engineering at the UG level and 24 courses at PG level in addition to Sciences, MBA, MCA and Ph.D programmes in all disciplines. The University has excellent infrastructural facilities including modern laboratories, library with video, Internet and other general amenities.

Location  - The university is located in the suburb of Sholinganallur about 15 kilometres from Adyar in Chennai. The university is situated next to the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly known as Old Mahabalipuram Road and also popularly known as IT Corridor). Click here for Google Map Location

Facilities

Hostels - The University provides Excellent Hostel Facilities. Thiru.M.Gopala Krishnan Illam and Dr.M.G.R Illam is for Boys and Panimalar Illam and Janaki M.G.R Illam is for Girls.

Following facilities are provided in the Hostel:

  • Banking Facility with ATM counter.
  • Medical facility available with free medicines provided to sick students.

  • Well equipped Gym (Boys and Girls separately).

Mess Facility - A large Mess Hall with a capacity of 2000 members to dine at the same time enables all students and staff to have lunch and breakfast. A large modem kitchen with steam cooking is attached to the mess hall. A modem bakery and ice-cream making unit are attached to the mess. There is a separate floor one each for Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian in the Mess Block to dine. All students (hostel students as well as day scholars) and staff members are provided lunch, tea and snacks everyday. Students and staff members are given ice-creams/sweets daily.

Internet - The University has dedicated Internet Leased line of 10 Mbps, connected to more than Four hundred terminals throughout the Campus. Students and faculty are free to access internet. This helps the students to prepare papers on the latest technologies to be presented in various symposiums and seminars. Interested students who are willing to go abroad for further studies can take up tests such as GRE and TOEFL, take up online mock test and also browse through websites of various universities and centres of higher education around the world. The access speed enables the Students and Staff to download and upload files at a fast rate.

Bank and ATM - There is an Indian Bank Extension Counter at the Campus. This helps Students and Faculty to open a bank account and make transactions safer and faster. ATM facility is also available.

Foreign Language Classes
- Some of the courses are:

1.  Japanese  Language Classes - “Spoken Japanese” is being conducted for the First Year Students in association with ABK-AOTS DOSOKAI, Chennai. The Duration of the Course is for about 100 Hours and the Management  pays the entire  course fee to encourage the students to learn Japanese. This helps our students to be placed in most of the IT and other major industries and also place them in IT companies as ‘Japanese Translators’. This will also help them to seek admission in Japanese Universities. The ABK – SATHYABAMA jointly issue the Certificates to the student who successfully completes the course. This certificate is valid in Global.

2.  German Language Classes - “First Level” are also being conducted for Second Year and Third Year undergraduate students in association with Goethe-Institute, Chennai. This helps them in getting admission at Universities in Germany and also for their Job placement.

Transportation - The University has more than 100 buses which are made available to the students and the faculty members for commuting from various points in the city and also from the suburbs like Ennore, Pattabiram, Thiruvallur, Red Hills, Chengleput, Poonamalle, Thiruvettriyur, Kancheepuram to the campus and back. All students should make use of the University Transport or should stay in the hostel. This facility has made it possible to start the classes in time and thereby helping the academic process. Our bus facilities have enabled us to maintain discipline among students. All the buses reach the Campus before 7.40a.m., so that all the students and faculty can have their breakfast and get ready to attend the classes at 8.00a.m. The buses leave the campus at 3.10p.m., which helps all the students to reach home early and safely. For the benefit of those students who are attending special classes, using Internet facility, Library etc., special buses are arranged everyday which leave the campus at 5.30p.m.

Health & Fitness Centre - Medical facility is available with free medicines provided to sick students. Medical Lab facility is also available. Other facilities include Well equipped Gym for Girls, Well equipped Gym for Boys and Yoga sessions are conducted for students to help them maintain both Healthy Mind and Body.

Scholarships - Sathyabama  University offers various  scholarships  for the meritorious students. Every semester in all disciplines, the University offers more than Rs.27 lakhs for overall toppers and semester toppers as merit scholarship.  Every  semester Five  students from  each section are awarded with cash based on their Academic performance. Fifteen percent of total fees are allocated for student from economical class / socially backward sections and physically challenged persons. 50% fee concession is provided to the above students. Fee concession is being given to students who participate in national / state level sporting events. Merit scholarships are given to students who are excellent in university exams.

Inplant Training - To enrich the practical knowledge of the students, the university insist the students to offer the in-plant training.In this training, students will have to study a problem in industrial perspective and submit the reports to the university.The training period will be 4 to 6 weeks. Generally the students will go for their in-plant training during their semester vacations.Such in-plant training will provide an industrial exposure to the students as well as to develop their career in the high tech industrial requirements. Some of the reputed companies which are providing inplant training to the students are Asian Paints, Alstom, Blue Star Air-Conditioners etc.

Advisory Bureau for Higher Studies - Advisory Bureau for Higher Studies has been instituted to cater to students those who are preparing for campus interviews and entrance examinations for higher studies in India like GATE, CAT, IES & IAS. It guides students for examinations like GRE, TOEFL, GMAT and IELTS.  The Bureau has got more than 8000 volumes of books in various categories like GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, CAT, IES, IAS, GATE, General Knowledge, English Language Skills and self development books. The Advisory Bureau has got a good collection of CD-ROM’s and audio cassettes on test preparation for GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and GMAT.

Some of its activities are:

  • Seminars are being conducted to keep in touch with the recent trends in the higher education scenario by resource persons from United States - India Education Foundation (USIEF) – a division of U.S. Embassy, U.K. Consulate, Professors from Foreign Universities and University alumni who have done/are doing higher studies in India and abroad. In these seminars they discuss in detail about the Admission Procedures, Tuition Fee details, Visa Processing, Scholarship Details, Bank Loans and Pre-departure.
  • The Advisory Bureau assist the students to prepare their Letter of Recommendation and Statement of Purpose (SOP) which has to be submitted to the universities while applying.

Quantitative Aptitude & Analytical Reasoning Training Classes - These are conducted regularly for U.G and P.G. students at our University Campus. This course is intended to train students to perform well in Campus Interviews. This course is being handled by our own Maths Faculty.

Personality Development Workshops - These are also conducted throughout the year for final year and pre-final year students with eminent resource persons to train our students in various areas like group discussions, attending personal interviews, communication skills, interpersonal skills, etc. The above training helped around 75% of students in getting suitable placements in various top notch companies.

Industrial Visit - Sathyabama  University  offers opportunities for all the students to interact on a consistent basis with Industries by way of visits to many renowned companies. Some of the visited industries are BEL - Bangalore, BEML - Bangalore, Integral Coach Factory - Perambur etc.

Conference Halls - There are Four Open Air Theaters  of 6500 sq.ft. each and three conference halls of 4000 sq.ft. All A/c halls are equipped with the latest teaching aids like LCD projector, slide projector and over head projector. Conference halls are for conducting guest lectures symposiums, seminars, placement Training programs ., etc. Educational cassettes are also projected in these theatres in consultation with subject staff. Movies are also screened in the theatre for hostel students on holidays.

Mineral Water Facility - The Reverse Osmosis Plant installed in the Satyabama University caters to the drinking water needs of all the Students, Teachers, supporting Staff and the Visitors. The raw water with an average Total Dissolved Solids [TDS] of 750-1000 ppm is treated to reduce the TDS content to less than 100 ppm the generally acceptable upper limit of the TDS. This is done in Three stages, namely: Pretreatment, passage of the water through 6 RO membrane filters held in parallel to each other{main process] and Post treatment. The maximum capacity of the plant is 1500 litres per hour [at the rate of 250 lit per membrane] The utilized capacity is 1000 lit/hr potable water. This water is Pure, Tasty and Hygienic rendering it highly suitable for human consumption. The rejects water from the plant is used for gardening and washing purposes. This plant not only facilitates the supply of safe drinking water but also obviates the otherwise involved huge expenditure for procuring drinking water for the large number of people in the campus. Now the institution can be liberal in the provision of our own made RO water. 66 coolers are connected to this plant providing drinking water in every floor of class room blocks, administrative block, library, laboratories, hostels etc.

Journals - The university has released the first issue of four international journals during Nov/Dec 2007 and second issue during July 2008.

Placement & Training - Placement and Training Cell offers Career Development Program for the students who are raring to enter the corporate world and introduce them to the prospective employers according to their aspirations and background. Regular Seminars are conducted to keep in touch with the recent trends in the Higher education scenario by resource persons from United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) - a part of U.S. Embassy, U.K. Consulate. GRE/MBA Entrance exam training has been started for pre-final year degree students.

Networking courses are also conducted for students on the following areas :

  • CCNA—CISCO Certified Network Administrators.
  • MCP - Microsoft Certified Professionals.
  • MCSE - Microsoft Certified Software Engineers.

Software courses for Non IT students are also conducted in the following areas :

  • Java Programming.
  • Oracle Visual Programming.
  • J2EE.
  • C & C + + Programming.
  • Internet Programming (HTML, XML, ASP, JAVA SCRIPT). 

Some of the eminent Recruiters of Students are Alstom, American Express, Asian Paints, Apsara Innovations etc.

Entrepreneur Development Cell - It creates an awareness of the needs and importance of Entrepreneurship as career option among students. The participants are given  exposure to various aspects of entrepreneurship during the programme period with help of both in house and guest faculties. The Cell also creates awareness for using IT as the key input for generating self employment rural industry and marketing of agricultural products.

Training for Executives - Training and development activities are important for the growth of both employees and the organization. The University conducts such Training form time to time.

Sports - The University is having excellent sports facilities in various disciplines like volleyball, basketball, football etc.

Achievements

  • Sathyabama University has established the World’s Largest Solar Steam Cooking System on 1st of July, 2009 in the campus. There110 concentrator dishes with an area of 1100 m2 (World’s largest installation in terms of the number of dishes and square metres of the reflecting concentrator dishes). These solar steam cooking systems were developed by M/s. Gadhia Solar Energy Systems Pvt. Ltd., Gujarat.
  • December 2002 witnessed the National Association of Students of  Architecture (NASA) convention, ‘YUGAM-02’ conducted by the  Sathyabama University, Chennai at their premises. The highlight of the  event was the attempt to paint the ‘World’s Longest Painting’. Their efforts have been finally rewarded, when the Guinness World Records Ltd. announced that their attempt has been recognized and have been awarded the certificate.
  • The participants were provided with pictures of 25-30 buildings in the time period. The 2235m of canvas was completely painted and it was scrutinized before being declared complete. This was followed by their appeal to the Guinness committee, which after much adieu has approved their painting genuine and valid of the honour. All their labours will be rewarded with the release of the next Guinness Book of World records, where their record will be put on print. The honour comes as yet another feather to the hat of the Sathyabama University.
  • It has been awarded B++ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and ISO 9001:2000 for professional quality management.
  • The University has undertaken various sponsored and collaborative Research and Development projects funded by national organizations such as Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) etc.
  • The University holds great promise to expand the applications of space technology, benefiting the common man and enriching the quality of life in association with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) the university is successfully conducting non formal education programmes through 18 Village Resource Centres (VRCs) all over the state.
