About Manonmaniam Sundaranar University

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was established on 7 September, 1990 to cater to the long felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu namely Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. It has been named after the famous poet-laureate and scholar, Professor P. Sundaram Pillai. This state University is a also a teaching cum affiliating University. The University has under its jurisdiction 61 affiliated colleges, 5 Mano Colleges and 1 Constituent College, with 65,000 students on rolls. These colleges, amongst which three are over 100 years old (St. John’s College, M.D.T. Hindu College, Sarah Tucker College, the oldest women’s college in the state), have contributed decisively to the cause of higher education of this region. There are 24 academic departments in the University. Sri Paramakalyani Centre for Environmental Sciences functioning at Alwarkurichi is an illustrious example of University-Industry collaboration while the Centre for Marine Science and Technology at Rajakkamangalam is breaking new ground in Coastal Area Studies. All the University departments are receiving research projects from several funding agencies in India, Europe, USA, Japan and UNO. The courses offered by the University have been designed keeping in mind the changing times and the emerging needs of the region. The University offers post-graduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes (part time and full time). MSU is the first to offer Choice-Based Credit System. The University’s National Service Scheme and Youth Welfare Department provide opportunities for the students to develop their overall personality.
 
The University Grants Commission, has accorded its approval for getting financial assistance since 29 March 1994.  The University Act authorizes the functioning of Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the university jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Council of India. The concept of community colleges, being experimented under the aegis of a special wing, offer diploma courses of one year duration to those interested in entrepreneurial enterprises and the Extension Learning Programme run by this wing also offers diploma and certificate courses on skill development.
Thiru Surjit Singh Barnala (the Governor of Tamilnadu) is the Chancellor of the University.

Location - MSU is situated at Tirunelveli (Latitude 8.44 and longitude 77.44) The campus is situated in a land area of 546.98 acres at Abishekapati on the outskirts of Tirunelveli, 4 kms. from the municipal limits on the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi highway.

Choice Based Credit System - CBCS is practised in many of the world’s acclaimed Universities. MSU is the first in Tamil Nadu to implement it in a full-fledged manner. Under the CBCS, students from one department have the option to choose courses from other departments as well. Every PG programme will carry 72 credits of which 66 credits will be earned in the core discipline. For the remaining 06 credits, the students can choose supportive courses from other disciplines. In short, the students have a decisive say in deciding what to study and how to prepare themselves for a career.With a strong committed team of nearly 100 qualified faculty members, the students of MSU have a clear edge over their counter parts elsewhere.

Community Colleges - Comprehensive pubic community colleges serve multiple educational purposes for their diverse citizens today. Community colleges have non-selective admission policies and, therefore, provide open access to anyone with or without a formal high school diploma . There is not a simple set of universal instructional objectives to properly measure student learning and achievement at the community college level . Students vary widely in many ways including age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, studying patterns, learning styles, as well as previous educational preparation . Community college instructors are being held increasingly accountable for how each student learns and achieves academic success in their classrooms. 

DDCE - Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education offers various programmes in arts, science and languages.

Onsite Academic Programe - In an electronic and communication era, the University stands committed to use high technology to offer technology oriented on-site degree programmes specially designed and developed for MNCs, Corporates and higher learning centres of excellence in India and abroad. The curriculum, syllabus and teaching methodology will be demand driven, area specific, skill and application oriented.

Placement Cell - The Department of Youth Welfare is in-charge of the Placement Cell. The Director, Department of Youth Welfare is the Coordinator of the Placement Cell. It coordinates with many industries and employment counsellors and organizes Job Fairs at the University. 352 students got jobs at the ‘Job Fairs’ last year. Apart from these, other students, for whom we have created contacts are also getting employed. It also conducts Workshops for students to enhance their employability skills and for teachers under ‘Train the Trainers’ programme.

Research - The University, with a view to encourage motivated young scholars to pursue Ph.D. programmes, awards 26 University Research Fellowships. In addition, there are candidates in the academic departments who receive fellowships from U.G.C., C.S.I.R. and other agencies for pursuing Ph.D. research programmes.

USAB - University Students Advisory Bureau tries to provide Career Guidance and Counselling to the students of the University Departments.

Library - The University Library is well equipped and has a good collection of reference works, books and journals. It has its membership with DELNET and also providing e-journals service through INFONET. Internet Facility with Online Public Access Cataloguing Service is provided to the users. The Library has been fully automated with the help of INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. There are shelves containing books gifted by American Information Resource Centre, Chennai.

Computer & Internet Centre - All the Science Departments have a Computer laboratories of their own. Students of arts and science departments are permitted to use the common Internet Centre available in the campus.

University Hostel - Hostel facility is available for women students. Foundation stone has been laid for the Hostel of men students.

Banks - The institute has two banks situated in the campus, Indian Bank and IB ATM Section. Both Sections are regular branches in the campus and are housed in separate buildings. All Application forms are sold in this bank.

Reservation of Seats - The rules of reservation of seats prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu are - 18% for SC, 1% for ST, 30% for BC, 20% for MBC and Denotified Communities and 31% for Open Competition will be followed in admission to each course. Among the total number of seats in the University Departments, 2% will be reserved for outstanding sports persons and 3% for Physically Handicapped.

Canteens - The campus has a couple of food joints, frequented more perhaps by hostelites looking for a change from hostel grub than the occasional visitor. The Campus Cafe is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on all working days including Saturdays. A wide variety of South Indian and all Side dishes are available.During lunch time Meals are available at very nominal rates
