About Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education - KARE

Kalasalingam University is a Private Deemed University established by Late ‘Kalvivallal’ Thiru T. Kalasalingam, who was also its Founding Chairman. The University started as Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering in 1984 by Kalasalingam and Anandam Ammal Charities. Government of Tamil Nadu granted permanent approval to it and Madurai Kamaraj University gave it permanent affiliation. It received Deemed to be University status in October 2006 and Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education (KARE) started functioning from the academic year 2007-08. It is located in the most backward rural area and has been established to provide technical knowledge to the downtrodden people children of the Virudhunagar District, firstly and the nation secondly. The university has UGC Approval under section 2(f) and 12(b) and has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation for all UG Programmes. It also has obtained ISO Certification by RWTUV, Germany.

The University is spacious, eco-friendly Institution with plenty of flora and fauna around. On weekends, when the campus is free from children, visitors like the Peacocks, the Peahens, batches of Deer, Bison, Wild Boars, Hedgehogs, provide a lovely sight. The presence of a sizable number of International community on campus helps, prevail a multicultural atmosphere.

Facilities at Kalasalingam University

Special B.Tech. Program for Speech and Hearing Impaired Persons - Kalasalingam University is the first Technical Institute to offer special B.Tech. Programs in the whole of Asia for children with speech and hearing impairment. This special programme was formally inaugurated by the then President of India, Hon. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on 5th January 2007. The medium of instruction is English. During the first two years of study, the students are prepared for Senior Secondary Examination conducted by NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling). The Institute also has Speech and Audiology lab to monitor and enhance the speech and hearing levels of these students.

These students are given an option to specialize in one of the following branches:

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Information Technology

Hostels – The institute provides Multi-storied, 9 floored, separate hostels for boys and girls. There are 4 Men’s Hostels and 3 Ladies Hostels. Boy’s hostels are named - Dr. Radhakrishnan Hostel, Bahagat Singh Hostel, Nelson Mandela Hostel and Bharathi Hostel. Girl’s hostels are named – Sarojini Naidu Hostel, Indra Gandhi Hostel and Annai Terasa Hostel.

Library – The central library is housed in a two storied building, constructed on a land area of 1,02,000 square feet and fully air-conditioned with the seating capacity of 500.  It has more than 74787 volumes of books in various subjects. The library subscribes to 360 periodicals in print at national and international level. Besides, the library has 3700 bound volumes of periodicals, 3992 Project Reports. The library is subscribing online resources such as IEEE (ASPP), ASTM Digital Library, DLINE, Sage, ACM and ASCE. To enable the users to browse these e-journals, e-learning materials, digital library collections of this campus and other online journals, a separate E-Library has been established with 48 computer systems. Video and Web courses developed by IIT under are also available here. A Separate Media Resource Centre is created (MRC) for accessing these resources. The library services have been automated with the software named MODERNLIB. It is a menu driven, interactive, package which provides information such as the availability of books, status of the books, user details etc. Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is also available to enable the students and staff for the same.

TIFAC-CORE - TIFAC-CORE in Network Engineering (TCNE) centre offers consultancy and testing facilities for industries and other user organizations in the field of Network Engineering. It specialises in the field of Computer Networks, Network Security, Embedded Networking and Power Networks. This centre is recognized as Sun Academy Initiative Partner, Cisco Networking Academy and Red Hat Academic Partner. Pearson VUE Testing centre is also established in this centre to enable the students to take international online certification exams of leading software certification authorities.

Academic Collaborations - Kalasalingam University has academic collaboration with the various leading foreign Universities and signed Memorandum of Understanding’s (MoU) with them. These universities are located in South Korea, Switzerland, USA, China, Germany, Malaysia, Romania, Mexico and the U.K.

Semester Abroad Program - Under the various Memorandum of Understandings, Kalasalingam University students can spend one or two semesters under the Semester Abroad Programme in the selected partner Universities to get the international exposure. The students undergoing this Semester Abroad Programme have to pay regular tuition fees to Kalasalingam University. The students have to pay only travel and living expenditures during their stay at a foreign University. There are also chances to avail the exchange student scholarships given by the respective countries. Similarly, students from partner Universities also come to Kalasalingam University to spend one semester.

Choice Based Credit System – the student has the freedom to choose the courses of his/her interest – nearly 40 percent of the syllabus

Banking Facilities - Union Bank of India has a branch on campus with two ATM’s that cater to the financial need of the campus community. Hassle-free educational loan facilities are offered to the students both by this bank and also by the Canara Bank.

n-CARDMATH – It stands for National Centre for Advanced Research in Discrete Mathematics and has been set up by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi. Kalasalingam University is the first institution in India to get n-CARDMATH. The centre has been established to promote research, development and advanced training in Discrete Mathematics. The n-CARDMATH Core Group Research facility (CGRF) in University includes a Library and a Laboratory with high speed computing facilities. There is also a provision for Visitors Programme. Under n-CARDMATH at Kalasalingam University ten sub-projects in the area of Graph Theory and Combinatorial Optimization have been approved by DST.

Center for Biotechnology - The centre carries out research in diverse fields of biotechnology that have an impact on human welfare. The research focuses on Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases, Bioprocess Engineering, Neurophysiology, Plant Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering and Animal Biotechnology. The centre also offers a doctoral program in Biotechnology.

Centre for Composites Materials – It is an interdisciplinary centre for carrying out teaching, research, design and development in the field of composite materials and their applications. The centre has dedicated laboratories for composite materials processing, materials testing, composite machining and deposition. The centre is taking effort to produce eco friendly high performance materials. This research centre is partially funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Health Centre - A round the clock Health Centre is facilitated with adequate drugs, male and female medical personnel and a ready-ambulance at the campus.

Food and Snacks - Multi-cuisine food courts and mobile canteen vents are also available on campus.

Utility Services – These include Post office, Photocopying Centres, Beauty Parlours, departmental stores, courier service points, public telephone booths, tailoring units, readymade shops etc.

Travelling – KLU has a good number of buses for providing transport facilities to different towns and cities in and around Srivilliputtur, Watrap, Tirumangalam, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Aruppukottai, Sivakasi, Satur, Rajapalayam, and Sankarankoil.

Guest House - University has a guest house with 30 well furnished Rooms for official guests and parents.

IEEE Student's branch - The IEEE is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. Through its global membership, the IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computer and Telecommunications to Bio-Medical Engineering, Electric Power and consumer Electronics.

Students Clubs - There are various students clubs which provide extracurricular and co curricular activities to the students

Some of these are:

I - Fine Arts Club - It organises and participates in various cultural fests

II - Nature Club – Under it are various groups.

These groups are:

  • Awareness Group - It conducts seminars and creates awareness among the public about wild life and their beneficial for human beings.
  • Photographic Group - The main work of this group is to take photos of wild species and to record the number of species present in the area.
  • Rescue Group - It saves animals, birds, snakes, etc. The important work of this group is to rescue injured and orphaned animals and to release them in a safe place like forest or any natural habits.
  • Research Group - The research group collects systematic data of animals and plants in and around our University area.

III - Tamil Mandram – It is a literary as well as cultural club established to provide a platform to share students’ passion for Tamil language, culture and heritage through wide spectrum of multi dimensional activities.

Sports and Games –The University provides facilities for playing various indoor and outdoor sports like badminton, basketball, table tennis, cricket, football, hockey, tennis, volleyball etc. There is a Gym in the indoor stadium. A total of 10 acres of area has been allotted for these facilities, housing about 15 different stadiums including an International Standard Track with 8 Lanes, Indoor Stadium built up with residential facilities for Sports persons and separate play grounds for all major games with flood light facilities.

Training and Placement - Office of Corporate Relations at Kalasalingam University maintains a strong and continuous partnership between the industries and university thereby affecting an exchange of knowledge between the University and the industries. Towards this, practical training and placements of the University students are coordinated by the Office.
