VELS University also known as Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies is a Deemed University. The University status was conferred to Vel's Group of Institutions, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India in 2008. The university is managed by Vel's Educational Trust founded by Dr. Ishari K Ganesh in 1992. Dr. Ishari K Ganesh is a visionary and an eminent educationalist and the founder of the prestigious Vel’s Group of Institutions. To promote a student-friendly learning environment, the University is following the semester pattern and choice based credit system for its entire academic programmes both at the under-graduate and post graduate levels. The system is expected to promote multipoint entry and flexibility to suit the needs of individual learners. The programmes offered are approved by AICTE and other statutory bodies such as Pharmacy Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapists and Director General of Shipping. Vels University is located in Pallavaram, a suburb of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu

Pallavaram is well connected by local electric train network and City Transport Corporation buses are available from the Pallavaram Railway Station to the campus and vice versa at nominal rates.

Hostels - There are separate hostels for men and women within the campus itself.

Library - Vels University Library building spans over an area of 20,000 sq. ft. It has a seating capacity of about 400 persons and follows Open Access System. The library houses a collection of 85,426 Books and 17,150 Back Volumes. It subscribes to more than 329 Periodicals (National and International), 11717+ E-journals, 3960 E-Books, 3296 Dissertations, 4445 Audio – Visual resources. There is a separate library for Maritime Studies at Thalambur having built up area of 3000 sq. ft and having more than7500 books.

Some other scholarships:

• Fee concession for teachers who register for Ph.D., at the University.
• The Vels University sanctions 'Starter Grants" to the teachers to encourage research. Monetary incentives are given to those who attend National, International Seminars and publish articles in Journals.
• Twenty full-time Stipendiary Fellowships with a monthly stipend of Rs.7,500/- are provided to each full-time research scholars.

CARD - Centre for Advanced Research and Development (CARD) has been established to promote research among faculty members, research scholars and students. A structured cadre has been established for promoting research. A strong contingent of about 40 persons belonging to all disciplines such as Engineering, Life Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Basic Sciences and Management are devoting their full time on research and development. The team is working on Wind and Solar energy, Environmental engineering, Alternative fuel, Nano-technology (nano-particles), Plant tissue culture, Animal Biotechnology, Fish Immunology, Stem cell research, Drug designing and Drug testing etc.

Business Incubation Centre - Vels University has started incubation centre to help the emerging entrepreneurs in terms of providing space, basis infrastructure, technical know-how to overcome their problems and facilitate in filing patents. The services include commercial exploitation to benefit society. The objective is to build a campus with small scale companies which can provide a practical exposure to the students as well. The inter-disciplinary research teams is capable of solving out any problem faced by the companies and normal a five year period is permitted for a company in the campus. Various reputed companies are already functioning in the campus.

Power Supply - To ensure continuous supply, HT power supply is maintained specifically for University. To overcome unexpected power failures, two separate Generators with capacity of 200 kw and 400 kw are installed within the campus.

Centre for Career Development and Placement – It conducts activities of placement like pre-placement talks, written tests, group discussions, and interviews as per the requirements of the organizations. The Placement and Training Centre is facilitated with a well-equipped conference training room and separate, well-furnished rooms for interviews and counselling.

Research Activities - To motivate the students for research, the science departments provide adequate opportunities for those who have research aptitude. The laboratories in Microbiology and Biotechnology are provided with sophisticated equipment. The students are allowed to choose their research area. The University has been approved by UGC to facilitate the flow of fund for research projects. The University has so far filed 12 patents and 3 of its technologies have been transferred for production. The University receives research grants from funding agencies.

Sports and Games - The Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies has vast and well laid out tracks, courts and a complex for volleyball, basketball, football, hockey, cricket, athletics and swimming. Facilities are also offered for various indoor as well. The students are encouraged to participate in various inter collegiate competitions to exhibit their talents and win medals and trophies. For this purpose Vel's Sports Academy is actively involved.

Auditorium -  Shivalayaa, the University Auditorium is fully air conditioned with seating capacity of 1500. It holds various curricular, co-curricular and cultural activities like seminars, conferences, intra and inter-universities cultural fests, thereby providing an opportunity for the students to exhibit their innate talents during the course of their study.

Conference Halls – The University possess 5 well-equipped, air-conditioned conference halls with latest audio-visual equipments for seminars and conferences.
