Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. The University was formed by bringing together and integrating well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.

Perarignar Anna University of Technology (PAUT) was the original name used in 1978. In 1982 the current name of Anna University was adopted, removing the words "Perarignar" and "Technology". In December 2001, it was converted into an affiliating university, with almost all engineering colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu under its fold and also absorbing all the six government engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu as its constituent colleges. In all, it brought together about 250 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu. Since 13th February 2007, only the colleges situated in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Vellore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai and Vilupuram in Tamil Nadu have been affiliated to Anna University.
The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entrepreneurship Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future. Since December 2001, it has become a large, highly renowned affiliated University, having brought into its fold about 225 Self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three Government-aided Engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamil Nadu State.

On September 14, 2011, a bill was passed to merge back the universities. Anna University has once again become a single affiliating university for engineering colleges all over Tamil Nadu from August 1, 2012.

Anna University Library - The University Library is located in 3 places, the College of Engineering (CEG) campus, Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) campus and School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) campus in a sprawling green eco friendly environment spanning across around 4025.49 sq.mts, 1256 sq.mts and 1200 sq.mts respectively. Library Around 10,157 registered uses are in access of the library. Many knowledge-based services like that of Reference, Bibliography, MALIBNET service., DELNET, Reprography, CD-ROM Databases, Internet browsing and e services are provided by the library for its users. he library is housing a massive collection of around 1,43,205 volumes of reading material in various branches of Science and Technology. 569 foreign and Indian journals also augment and supplement the strength of document collection. Last but not the least, all the 4 constituent colleges of Anna University are well connected by network.
RCC - Ramanujan Computing Centre is functioning as a technology provider to students, researchers and teaching community to fulfil their computational, technological and internet requirements.The Internet service is provided with wider bandwidth of 48 Mbps and 1 Gbps from NKN for Ministry of Human Resource Development.
CDE - Centre for Distance Education offers professional MBA, MCA and M.Sc.programmes in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Information Technology and Software Engineering degree programmes through distance mode.
CIA - Centre for International Affairs has been coordinating the bilateral research and academic programmes with overseas Institutions/Universities through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Exchange of Faculty / Students, Foreign Language Programmes and conduct of International Joint Seminars/Conferences. At present the University has established academic and research collaborations with more than 68 foreign Universities / Institutions through MoUs. The CIA has Overseas Professor Scheme with Thirty Professors from the USA, Germany, Australia, Japan, Sweden, France, Italy, Switzerland and England. The Overseas Professors have been visiting Anna University Chennai and collaborating with faculty and students. It is responsible for admission of students under Foreign Nationals (FN), Non-Resident Indians (NRI), and People of Indian Origin (PIO) and Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWGC) for Undergraduate Degree (B.E / B.Tech / B.Arch) and Postgraduate degree (M.E / M.Tech / MBA / MCA / M.Plan / M.Sc) programmes.
Centre for Research - It is offering research programme in multifarious branches of engineering, technology and in science and humanities. It is offering admission twice a year. Every year at least 120 scholars are awarded Ph.D degree and at least 150 scholars with M.S (By Research).
CTDT - Centre for Technology Development and Transfer (CTDT) was established at Anna University as a Single Window for Partnership with Industries for Research & Development and Consultancy. It channelises the facilities and capabilities available at the University and can play a vital role in bringing together people from Industry and the Academia. It is involved in testing and analysis of products, design and analysis of instruments and equipment etc.
EMRC - Educational Multimedia Research Centre is one of the seventeen media centres established by the University Grants Commission to produce Educational Television (ETV) programmes for the college students. Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) coordinates the activities of the media centres.
AU TVS CQM - AU TVS Centre For Quality Management is an autonomous centre where faculty, students and industry personnel confluence to update the theoretical and practical knowledge.
AU-FRG Institute for CAD/CAM - It is a premier centre of Anna University. It conducts high quality training programmes in the field of CAD/CAM/CAE for the benefit of working engineers and engineering graduates. Apart from the regular courses, it is also possible to offer customized training in different specialisations according to the demand.

UICC- Centre for University Industry Collaboration is involved in campus placement for Engineering / Management students, interaction between Institute and Industry, faculty empowerment programmes, training programmes for students on core competency development and action research programmes in engineering and technology.
TCCA - Training Centre for Career Advancement provides vocational training course in Servicing and Repair of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Equipment, course in Servicing and Repair of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Equipment. This course is taught in Tamil and English. This course is sponsored by Rotary Club.
CAI - The Centre for Affiliation of Institutions (CAI) is an autonomous Centre of Anna University, its primary function being to facilitate granting of affiliation and to process other allied matters pertaining to the Engineering colleges under its jurisdiction encompassing Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Vellore, Thiruvanamalai and Villupuram districts of Tamilnadu.
Centre for Women Empowerment - It is involved in various workshops and programmes for the upliftment of women especially in rural areas.
CED - Centre for Entrepreneurship Development is committed to Create, Coordinate, Foster and Develop Entrepreneurial Activities in three major areas: 1) Entrepreneurship Education and Research, 2) Entrepreneurship Development Alliances and 3) Community Development.
CFD - Centre for Faculty Development conducts faculty development training programmes to cater to the needs of faculty members. The Centre trains the teachers to plan and prepare the lessons, understand the subject contents and improve the teaching quality. These programmes are conducted during the Summer / Winter Vacation to enable the teachers to participate and benefit.
Centre for Professional Development Education - It is an autonomous centre of Anna University with the vision to impart higher education to upgrade the skills of practising engineers through information technology means. The Centre is committed to provide equal opportunity in higher professional education to all and to generate trained manpower in all areas of Engineering Sciences so that the Engineers will equip themselves globally competitive.
Health Centre - Health Centre facilities with attached Inpatient Ward are available at the Main Campus and at MIT campus. Consultation is free for all the students and employees.The Centre provides outpatient treatment both in the morning and evening. The Para-Medical Personnel include one Pharmacist, one Staff Nurse and a Male Nursing Assistant. The emergency cases are treated as inpatients.
Logistics Centre - The Centre cater the needs of the U.G. and P.G. students Industrial Visits, survey camp and field visits. The Centre is arranging transport facility for the smooth conduct of TNPCEE, TANCET and TNEA.
PPOST - Patriotic and People Oriented Science and Technology Centre (PPOST) is an inter-disciplinary Centre that is run jointly with the PPST Foundation, Chennai. The Centre undertakes research and development activities pertaining to rural industries and technologies. The decentralized textile industry is the focal area of the Centre and the Centre is working on technologies suitable for yarn spinning and dyeing.
CWR - Centre for Water Resources is involved in teaching, research, consultancy and impart training programmes in hydrology, water resources engineering, irrigation management and water quality and quantity management. It is basically the upgraded Hydraulics Division of the Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai.
Centre for Environmental Studies - It is involved in conducting research and to create new knowledge as an integral part of our education programme and the continued renewal of the profession. Infrastructure facilities available at the Centre include an advanced Research Laboratory, Analytical Laboratories, Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, Unit Operations and Processes Engineering Laboratory, Waste Processing Technology Demonstration Plant, Tool Room, Computing Facility and Environmental Information Centre.
CDMM - The Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management is involved in providing training and establishing a database in order to prevent and minimise natural disasters.
IRS - Institute of Remote Sensing has about 2400 sq.mts. of built-up space for various laboratories, equipped with sophisticated equipment worth Rs. 150 million. It houses three laboratories namely Surveying, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratories. It also run undergraduate, postgraduate and research degree courses like B.E. Geo Informatics, M.Tech. Remote Sensing & M.E. Geo Informatics etc.
IOM - Institute for Ocean Management is a multi disciplinary group has excellent laboratory facilities in coastal/ marine and environmental science research-dedicated laboratories. These include an analytical laboratory for wet chemistry studies, trace gas measurements, sediment preparation and analytical laboratory. The Gas Chromatograph laboratory has four high precision Gas Chromatographs, used for the determination of trace levels of greenhouse gases (CH4, CO2, and N2O) and other organic pollutants in estuarine, coastal and marine systems. In addition the alpha, beta and Gamma spectrometry facility has an ultra-low background system, used for 210Pb, 226Ra and 137Cs dating of soils, sediments and other environmental samples (flora and fauna). It is also used to measure gamma-emitting radionuclides in coastal environmental samples.
IES - Institute for Energy Studies has sophisticated energy audit instruments. It is also involved in various research activities in the field of renewable energy systems, bio-energy conversion technologies, solar passive architecture, energy efficient buildings, thermal energy storage systems etc.
Centre for Aerospace Research - It has adequate design, analysis and computational capabilities to take up problems in high speed and low speed flows, structure, aero-thermal effect and composites. The applications software being regularly employed include MSC-NASTAN, STAR-CD,CFX,I_DEAS and tascflow. For carrying out experimental studies in the thrust areas, the Centre is having laboratories and facilities with specialized equipment.
KBC - K B Chandrasekhar Research Centre offers research programs which combine the Academic with the Industrial, the Theoretical with the Experimental, the Long-term with the Short-term – and cover the areas of Life Sciences and Information Sciences. The Centre has a Wet Biology Lab focusing on nano-scale and single-molecule biology studies with advanced instrumentation and facilities, a Bio Informatics Lab, a Communication and Network Security Lab, a Natural Language Processing Lab focusing on Knowledge Discovery techniques, and a Free/Open Source Software Lab.
CBT - Centre for Biotechnology is one of the Distributed Information Centres (DIC) set up by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Information dissemination and training is one of the mandates of the centre. It also provides Internet facility to students through the Campus network. Some of the Major Equipments available and in use are Plate scintillation counter, Liquid handling system, Gel Documentation system , Deep freezer-80C etc.
CGC - Crystal Growth Centre had implemented several major national research programs supported by National funding agencies such as DST , DAE, DRDO, UGC, ISRO, MNES, DOE, BRNS, IUAC, CSIR, Tamil Nadu Government etc. The Centre had also been continuously organizing several National / International conferences / Workshops/refresher courses / seminars / symposium to constantly promote research and development activities. A few industrial consultancy programs have also been carried out by the centre.
Building Technology Centre - It develops and propagates building materials and methodologies, which can reduce the construction costs using nationally acknowledged modern technologies and scientifically established methods.The centre also creates awareness about the need for good quality in building construction.
Centre For Development of Tamil in Engineering and Technology - The Centre periodically publishes books in Engineering and Technology in Tamil and aslo the Magazine Kalanjium. The vision of the Centre is to enhance the activities thereby popularizing Tamil in Engineering and Technology.
Centre for Medical Electronics - The Centre offers core courses in Biomedical Instrumentation, Equipments, Biosignal processes and Medical Imaging including a course in Anatomy and Physiology. The latest technologies have been incorporated in twelve Elective courses spread over Laser & Ultrasonic applications in Medicine, Rehabilitation Engineering, Medical Informatics, Physiological Simulation, Radiological Equipments, Hospital Equipment and Management, Microprocessor and Computers applied to Medicine, etc.
CIPR - Centre for Intellectual Property Rights is working as a project centre for providing E and IT Patent Visualization and Alert services. It promotes IP (Intellectual Property) awareness among students, faculties through streamlined awareness campaigns, organizes short-term IP (Intellectual Property) modules, seminars, workshops and conferences etc.
CARIT - Centre for Applied Research in Indic Technologies is involved in digitising of Indic literature in various languages and using ICT based methodologies including context-sensitive concept based digital library searches to cull out the engineering and technological solutions embedded in these works. It is also involved in exploring the 'psychoacsoustics' of speech and music as detailed in Indic literature and thereby furthering research in the frontier areas such as Cognitive Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and Computational Neurosciences etc. Indic as an adjective means "of or relating to India or its peoples or cultures". Hence Indic Traditions, Indic Scriptures and Indic Technologies.
CCAR - Centre for Applied Research in Indic Technologies has software packages for developing Regional Climate Models – using PRECIS as a licensed user from the Met Office, U.K. It has a strong network of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System platform to work out the Climate modelling and all kinds of mapping facilities. There is good expertise in all inter and multi-disciplinary areas of research such as hydrology, hydrogeology, coastal ecosystem management, sociology and communication to address all the issues related to climate change.
SACEE - South Asia Centre for Engineering Education is the UNESCO's International Centre for Engineering Education. It is the world's first and only centre for it's kind in engineering education. It is highly regarded as a most signification undertaking in the globalisation of engineering education and has acclaimed international recognition and support. Its principal objective is to foster technological advancements in developing countries through the improvement of engineering education.
AUSTPAHC - The Anna University Science and Technology Park and Hobby Centre is being launched with an avid objective to establish the infrastructure facilities which will enable the students to develop creativity in their mind and with a vision to install a spirit of scientific and technical experimentation and also to provide a conductive environment for self exploratory work.
Youth Red Cross - The Youth Red Cross is the most important constituent of its mother organization, Indian Red Cross. It is a group movement organized at the initial stages for students between 18 and 25 years of age within the colleges. A qualified lecturer is recognized as the leader and he is called the Programme Officer under his guidance, the students are trained and encouraged to manage the affairs of the group, electing their own office-bearers.
NSS - National Service Scheme provides diversified opportunities to students in colleges and Universities to develop their personality through community services. Community services rendered by university level students have covered several aspects like adoption of villages for intensive development work, mass tree plantation etc.
CSAU - Computer Society of Anna University conduct a number of events throughout the year, that not only serve as a challenging platform for students to exhibit their talents but also provide an opportunity to volunteers to enhance their managerial skills and handle situations with responsibility.
