Anna University, Tiruchirappalli was established in January 2007. Earlier it was a part of Anna University at Chennai which had to be divided into Four Universities in different Locations for administrative convenience.  It has been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a Technical University. The University started functioning from 01-02-2007. It is named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai who was popularly known as 'Anna' meaning brother in the local language.

The University had 7 Campuses and 2 Government Engineering Colleges, 77 self financing Engineering Colleges, 8 Stand Alone Institutions offering M.B.A. course, 2 Stand Alone Institutions offering M.C.A. course and 1 Stand Alone Institution offering B.Arch. Architecture Course in the districts of Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Nagappattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, and Theni were affiliated to this University.

With the changes in the administration the university name has been changing throughout the time, thus the University is also known as Anna University Chennai – Regional Office (AUC-ROT), BIT Campus and Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. A year after the division of university into a number of universities, a bill was passed on September 14, 2011 to merge back the universities. Almost all engineering colleges in the south district have been placed under it. These include 5 Constituent Engineering Colleges, 64 Self-Financing Colleges, 10 MBA colleges, 3 MCA Colleges and 3 Architecture Colleges. The university is an accredited university with powers to grant affiliations to colleges and universities conducting graduate and post graduate studies, as well as diploma courses and is so recognized by the UGC.

1.  CAE - Centre for Academic Excellence provide a platform that commits for advancement of knowledge, promotion of teaching and research that stimulates the intellectual development of all academicians and learners through Innovative and Research Initiative Programmes which help all to succeed in career and life.

Programmes Offered:

a)  B.E. - Part-Time.

b)  M.E. through MBCBS - Mechanical Engineering through Modular Based Credit Banking System comes under PEEP which stands for Professional Education Enrichment Plan. Eligibility for this Course requires a candidate to be a Professional working in Industrial Organisation with one year experience.

d)  Short Term Programmes - The objective of Short Term Programme is to promote excellence in teaching and learning through Faculty Development Programmes, Short Term Training Programmes, Instructional Methodology Enhancement Programmes, Campus Placement Training Programmes, Research Initiative Programmes, Study Smarter Programmes and Soft Skills Development Programmes.

2.  CCT - Centre for Convergence of Technologies focuses on research in Web Services, Wireless Computing, Ad-hoc Sensor Networking, Embedded Systems and Pervasive Computing areas. The Centre works on projects that bring out the convergence of core engineering disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Petrochemical, Civil & Instrumentation Control with Information Technology.

Programme Offered:

a)  M.E. Pervasive Computing Technologies - It is the new arena in the field of Computing dealing with the Integration of Wireless, Mobile, Embedded and Distributed Computing and Sensor Networks. It is the idea that almost any device, from clothing to tools to appliances to cars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be embedded with chips to connect the device to an infinite network of other devices. The number of leading Universities around the world like Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Birmingham City University are currently exploring the Pervasive Computing Technology.

3.  CUIC - Centre for University-Industry Collaboration serves as a channel for free flow of expertise and knowledge between the University and Industry, by offering programmes for the benefit of students, faculties, research scholars, placement and training officers on industrial expectations. 

4.  CEP - Centre for Engineering Partnership facilitates granting of affiliation and to process other allied matters pertaining to the 77 Self-financing Engineering colleges, 2 Government Engineering Colleges, 8 Stand alone Institutions offering M.B.A. course, 2 Stand alone Institutions offering M.C.A. course and 1 Stand alone Institution offering B.Arch - Architecture course in the districts of Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Nagappattinam, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruvarur, and Theni that are under the jurisdiction of Anna University Tiruchirappalli.

5.  CFSA - Centre for Students Affairs is involved in various academic matters of the University, like issuing Provisional Eligibility Certificates to other State candidates, checking and issuing recognition of qualification for outside candidates of all Colleges etc.

E-Learning - The University provides E-Learning Facility for the students.

Centre for Research - The Centre for Research is planning to focus on the technologies which will be beneficial to the society and to advance the state of the art Research in many Science and Engineering Disciplines. It will act like a Nodal Centre for Applied Research. It offers M.S. and Ph.D. programmes for the enlightenment of teachers and industrialists to the next level of knowledge.

AUTRF - Anna  University Tiruchirappalli Research Foundation provides an Organization for the Management and Physical support for Fundamental, Applied and Computational Research, discovery of new ideas and advancement of Innovative and wide ranging cutting-edge technologies. AUTRF is conceived as a nodal centre that can be used to transfer ideas from laboratory concepts to marketable products in addition to providing the technical expertise needed to help the researchers, sponsors and clients to remain at the vanguard of advanced, state of the art technologies. The Research Foundation is aiming to support TAU Faculty, Staff and Researchers in identifying and obtaining external support (pre-award) from sponsors and is responsible for the administration of all such funded programs (post-award). It supports all of the University initiatives for recruiting and retaining the best-qualified researchers and significantly increasing the level of sponsored funding received at this campus.

NSS - National Service Scheme is a student–centred programme in which projects are implemented by the NSS volunteers in the community in close collaboration with the clientèle community for their own benefit. NSS activities which include Village Adoption Scheme, Slum Development Programme, Special Camps etc. which are meant for the development of the community as a whole.
