Anna University - Tirunelveli, also known as Anna University of Technology - Tirunelveli was established on 17th September 2007 by a Tamil Nadu Government Act No.28 of 2007 from the splitting of Anna University (main) in the same year. As of 2011 it is also known as Anna University - Regional Office, Tirunelveli or Regional Office : Anna University Tirunelveli Region because of the September 14, 2011 bill, passed to merge back the universities. But as of February 2012, the separate universities are still operating as they were before the merger. The University is bestowed with powers to grant affiliations to engineering colleges situated within the 5 districts - Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli has also established two University Colleges of Engineering, at Thoothukudi and Nagercoil during the academic year 2009-10. University V.O.Chidambaranar College of Engineering, Thoothukudi campus encompasses 25 acres of land and University College of Engineering, Nagercoil Campus also comprises of 25 acres of land.
As of 2010, there are 53 Self financing Colleges and 18 Newly affiliated Colleges that come under the University. In order to identify the need for effective communication skills, the Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli pioneered the introduction of Communication Skills Laboratory for five semesters (II semester to VI semester) for the students of all colleges under Anna University Tirunelveli. The curriculum is designed in such a way that the engineering students can acquire precise, clear and effective communication skills to compete with their counterparts elsewhere in the world.

Facilities
CPDE - Centre for Professional Development Education imparts higher education to upgrade the skills of practising engineers through information technology means.
Centre for Research - It caters to the needs of interested research scholars, faculty of engineering colleges and the working professionals from industries. It offers research programmes such as Ph.D. and M.S. (by research) in various branches of Engineering, Technology, Management, Science and Humanities. This centre normally admits scholars for both the programmes twice a year.
Laboratories - The University Department of electrical engineering has well featured laboratories in the major areas of Embedded, VLSI, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Logic circuits etc. Electrical and Electronics Engineering extends sufficient Computing and library facilities. The laboratory is equipped with Target board supported software packages, embedded processor development modules with multiple user license and manuals. The available software packages include Xilinx, RTOS, C Compiler etc. The Faculty of Management Sciences has fully developed computer laboratory with ERP-business one, SPSS, TORA and Tally Softwares.
E-Governance - Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli implemented a unique e-governance Management System first of its kind in India that connects all the 76 Affiliated Colleges (within the five districts) through an exclusive OFC with an 1 mbps bandwidth. This e-governance Management System is a private intranet facility provided by BSNL exclusively connecting all the 76 affiliated engineering colleges with the University Data Centres (UDC). Through this e-governance Management System, students’ academic matters, research activities and University examination have been managed. The e-governance Management System facilitates the students to learn by e-learning and online expert lectures from erudite professors to enrich the knowledge of the students.
Sports Facility - Sports Facilities are available for both boys and girls in various disciplines like basket ball, football, hockey, kabaddi etc.
RRC - Red Ribbon Club promotes is a voluntary on-campus intervention program for students in educational institutions. It provides access to information on healthy life and voluntary blood donation. The club creates and provides opportunity for youth to contribute towards the control and prevention of HIV & AIDS.
NSS - National Service Scheme conducts a 7-day special camp every year in which about 50% of the volunteers of each NSS unit participate. The University NSS conducts various programmes in coordination with its affiliated colleges. These programmes are Tree plantation, Polio immunization drive etc.
