About Annamalai University
The Annamalai University is a unitary, teaching and residential university. It was founded by the munificence of the farsighted and noble hearted philanthropist and patron of letters the late Hon'ble Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt, LL.D., D.Litt. He started several colleges and ultimately the University in 1929. Since its inception, it has progressively tried to realize the aims of the noble Founder Pro-Chancellor. After him, his illustrious son Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad was the Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984 and he sedulously nurtured the growth and development of the University. The present Pro-Chancellor Dr.M.A.M. Ramaswamy, a philanthropist and a patron of sports, is the distinguished son of Dr.Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar. The University has had the unique good fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-Chancellors to guide its destinies. During the last eighty years, the University has grown rapidly and consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with Forty-nine Departments of Study and over 2500 members on its teaching staff. Annamalainagar is already a busy and full-fledged University town east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja.
Infrastructure
The University which started with only seven departments in 1929 has, over the last 80 years, developed into a mighty institution of higher learning with nearly 49 Departments, in all 9 Faculties. This is one of the very few institutions in India with all the Faculties located on the same campus. The University can be proud of a well equipped Central Library and Laboratories providing very good facilities for taking up research projects, for PhD and Post-Doctoral work. Several Research Projects have been undertaken by various Faculties funded by several agencies including the State and Central Governments. A close interaction has been developed between the institution and the neighbouring industries for promotion of research and training programmes. Courses like biotechnology, bioinformatics and job-oriented courses have been started in various Faculties and Directorate of Distance Education.

Facilities and Campus of Annamalai University
- Campus - The University campus, including the colleges, hostels and playgrounds occupies an area of about thousand acres.
- Library - The University is a proud owner of a well equipped Central Library
- Laboratories - The University provides very good facilities for taking up research projects, for PhD and Post-Doctoral work.
- Research - Several Research Projects have been undertaken by various Faculties funded by several agencies including the State and Central Governments. A close interaction has been developed between the institution and the neighbouring industries for promotion of research and training programmes.
- University Hostels - There are about 14 hostels including both men and women hostels.
Other Facilities Offered by Annamalai University
- Distance Education - The Directorate of Distance Education established in 1979 offers four hundred and one different programmes of study under the Regular Stream. It is credited with the largest enrollment in India and is well equipped with the computer and other infrastructure, adequate teaching faculty and administrative set-up of its own, study centres, computer training centres, etc., to serve its students' clientele in their best interest at their doorsteps. It has also the unique distinction of offering first in India, Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Applied Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics and Law through Distance Education mode. The Directorate of Distance Education is also offering the Programmes on Fashion Design, Textile Design, Interior Design, Hotel Management and Catering Technology Programmes, Retail Management, Twinning Programme, Programmes on Health Science, Commonwealth Youth Programme, Yoga, Music, Fire and Safety, Pharmaceutical and Taxation Programmes. All the programmes of study offered by the Directorate of Distance Education have the approval of the Distance Education Council, New Delhi. The Directorate is introducing B.Ed. Programme through distance education mode from the year 2008-09 with the approval of National Council for Teacher Education, New Delhi.
- Campus Recruitment Programmes - Campus Recruitment Programmes (since Sep 2004) is one of the major events in which prestigious organisations like Asian Motors Ltd, Standard Chartered Bank, Appollo Pharmaceuticals, ESSAR Steel etc. participate to recruit talented candidates.
- Sports - Tennis Complex, the Gymnasium and Sports Laboratory are few sports facilities here.
Achievements
- “The Times Higher Education World University Ranking - 2018” has ranked Annamalai University in 801 - 1000 for Overall category and 401 - 500 for Life Sciences category.
- "The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2017”, on scientific impact of universities and on universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration & scientific performance, has ranked the University at 14th based on the number of publications and 3rd based on the proportion of publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10% most frequently cited.
- "The CII”, in its Report based on “Indian Citation Index” Database has ranked Annamalai University second among the Top 50 State Universities in Research Productivity: Ranking based on Articles, Citations and Citations/Paper.
- “The Nielsen - India Today Ranking” (2017) has ranked Annamalai University 11th among the top 30 Universities in India.
- “The SCImago Institutional Ranking” (2016) has ranked 4th in Tamil Nadu and 20th among the top 100 institutions for Higher Education in India.
- International Comparative Performance of India's Research Base (2009-14), a report published by Elsevier in April, 2016, prepared in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science, Government of India has rated the University as the top Indian Institute in Pharmacology, 17th among the top 30 Indian Universities in Publications with highest subject area Publication Count in Pharmacology.
- As far as the Global Exposure, Indian Science Ascending, a Springer Nature report, done in conjunction with Confederation of Indian Industries, has ranked the University as 11th among the top 20 Indian Institutions in International Collaborations.
- The University has participated in the Southern (Antarctic) Ocean Expeditions (SOE) organized by National Centre for Antarctic Ocean Research 2011 - 12 onwards.
Research & Partnership
- Annamalai University has a commendable track record in projects and publications and has been awarded the PURSE Programme by the Department of Science and Technology. Nineteen departments are supported by UGC-SAP, Sixteen by DST-FIST and two departments have attained the status of Centre of Advanced Study. Annamalai University has joint research and innovation partnerships with 24 institutions across the USA, Europe, Australia, Japan, and the UK. The list of partners includes prestigious institutes like Karolinska Institute, John Hopkins University, and the University of Michigan amongst others.
- Two of the most notable international collaborations in which Annamalai University is the Co-ordinating Institute include the Indo- EU FUNCFOOD Project and the 21st Century Indo-US Knowledge Initiative. There are several ongoing research projects with international foundations and industrial players like Bayer, CavinKare, Dow AgroSciences, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, HCL, L&T, Accenture, and Huawei.
MoUs & Patents
- To its credit, The University has obtained 15 Patents and has 40 MoUs with research partners like FAO, IRRI & USDA.
Institutional Social Responsibility Activities
- The ISR activities of the University include Hospital on Wheels, Free Medical and Dental Camps in Villages, Lifestyle & Hygiene Awareness, Rural & Urban Health Centres through the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry which is attached with a 1400 bedded hospital. The Faculty of Agriculture carries out extension activities like Agripreneurship Development Programme, Sustainable Livelihood Projects for Tsunami affected people and Training Farmers in Integrated Farming.
Overseas Campus
- In 2005, Annamalai University opened a small campus in Toronto, Canada. It only provides classes for learning Indian fine arts such as music and dance. Some other Overseas Centres are Al Mihad Institute - Dubai, Al Hilal Education - Sharjah and Al Noor Education - Muscat.
