Bharath University was established under the aegis of Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust with the aim of imparting higher knowledge in Science and Technology to the aspiring boys and girls so that they can emerge as competent scientists, engineers and technologists of repute. BIST was started in the year 1984, and acquired deemed to be University status in the year 2003 by University Grants Commission (UGC). Earlier it was known as Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research.The Institute is committed to the grand task of providing quality education, which will transform the students into efficient and successful careerists. Students who have graduated from BIST are already serving in responsible positions, in India and aboard.
The University lays special emphasis on providing the best infrastructure for learning on all its campuses. All the Institutions of the group are provided with spacious buildings to accommodate reception, office and classrooms, staff-rooms, drawing halls, laboratories, workshops, libraries, computer centers, auditoriums, conference halls, examination halls, recreation centers for staff and students, sports rooms, dispensaries, canteens, hostels placement cells, rooms for NCC, NSS, Rotract, rest rooms and fine arts clubs. There are separate Under-graduate and Post-graduate blocks.
An important feature is that most of the buildings have been designed and constructed by the Departments of Civil Engineering and Architecture. All the buildings have been elaborately furnished and fitted with all necessary fixtures. Back up generator facilities of high capacity make the institutions independent of the public power system. The institute has earned over the years an enviable reputation for excellence; thanks to instruction by the highly qualified academics of distinction, staffing the various faculties. The uniquely designed special programmes offered by the Institute have already placed it on par with some of its counterparts, both at home and aboard.

Computing Facilities - The university chooses to lay special emphasis on ensuring that its graduates are ready for the technical challenges of an information society. There are a number of computing facilities available on the college campus. These are Management Information Systems Lab, Database Management Lab, Babage Computing Center, Microprocessor Lab, Digital Simulation Lab, Artificial Intelligence Parallel Processing Lab Etc.
Library - The college library offers a wide range of learning resources. The library has a collection of books around 75,000 and subscribes to 80 periodicals and journals, both National and International. The service is fully computerized. Computer terminals are available for searching the library catalogue and for making reservation for books. Digital library facilities and CD-ROMS on periodicals and books and audio-visual materials on a variety of study areas are available. Air-conditioned study room with reference books make the library reading a pleasure.
Hostels - The college has separate hostels for men and women. The hostel can accommodate around 400 boys and 200 girls. Comfortable single, double and triple bed rooms are available in the hostel. Tasty and nutritious food is served in the dining hall. You can opt for either vegetarian or non-vegetarian food. Foreign students can order food according to their preference. Cable television and Telephone facilities are also available.
Placement - A host of on-campus resources are available to help you identity and prepare for a successful career in your chosen field. Campus interviews are arranged by the placement cell, which attracts employers from all over the nation to the campus for Recruiting budding Engineers from various specializations. The college also conducts guest lectures, seminars and arranges industrial visits to enable the students to become successful technocrats and management professionals.
Internet Café - Internet access is through a 64 kbps leased line from VSNL and a 2 mbps leased line from DISHNET DSL for reliable connectivity. Internet services are provided to all students through two P IV 1 Ghz DNS servers and one P III 866 Mhz Proxy server. Two PIII 866 Mhz E-mail serves cater to the Institutes's E-mail requirements. It also provides Internet access facilities for the student's hostels.
DTP Center - The center handles the Desktop Publishing work of all Departments, students and staff. The center is equipped with a serve under Window NT, a Colour Jet, a Scanner, a laser printer, a Deskjet printer and a dot matrix printer. It uses MS Office 2000, Adobe Pagemaker and Multilingual Software for application work.
Transport - The college operates buses for comfortable transportation of students and staff. College buses ply from various points in the city such as Anna Nagar, Triplicane, Adayar and Tambaram for the benefit of the students. Besides, the college campuses are easily accessible by public transportation systems.
Recreation - One can have an air relaxation and develop comradeship with one another through recreation facilities available on the campuses. A separate recreation hall for women and a Day Scholar center for men are available on the campuses.
