Bharathiar University was established at Coimbatore by the Government of Tamil Nadu in February, 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982). The Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras, which was functioning in Coimbatore before 1982 formed the core of the Bharathiar University. In May, 1985 the University received the recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi for the purpose of grants. The University is named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi. The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It is of an affiliating type, with jurisdiction over the revenue district of Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Erode. As of now the University has 119 affiliated colleges, 81 Arts and Science Colleges, 30 are Colleges of Education, 7 Management institutions and 1 Air Force Administration College. In addition, there are 19 Research Institutes of the State and Central Governments, which are recognized by this University for research purpose. And all these institutions cater to the educational needs of more than 1,50,000 students and research scholars. The University follows Choice Based Credit System and semester pattern of instruction for all the Post – graduate courses. Each semester is having a minimum of ninety working days.
University Schools
Location - The University is situated at the backdrop of Maruthamalai Hills in the Western Ghat range about 15 kms. from the City of Coimbatore on the Maruthamalai Road.
Transportation
City bus on routes 1, 1B, 1D, 1E, S12, S13, S15, S26, 46, 70, 70A, 70B, 76, 92 stop at the University bus stop. Route 1C buses ply via Coimbatore railway station frequently up-to Vadavalli, from where the above buses can be used to reach the University.
Facilities
Library - The seating capacity currently is about 300, and has over 1,20,000 volumes covering all disciplines. The library subscribes to 163 National and International journals and seven leading news papers. 150 journals magazines and periodicals are received on gratis. Back issues of journals are available some dating back to 1880`s. Library operations are mostly computerized especially books circulation and OPAC. The University library is a member of UGC – INFLIBNET - INFONET E – Journal consortium. Separate 512 kbps Internet connectivity is available to access more than 4000 titles of journals from 15 National and International publications through 12 systems in the UGC-INFONET-INFLIBNET lab. The Lab is equipped with a Heavy Duty Printer for use. At present the university library has 200 E-book CDs and 575 CD along with books acquired for the library. Separate Multimedia section is available to the users for effective use of audio visual resources in the library.
Library - The Bharathiar University has four hostels namely Ladies Hostel (for research scholars and PG students), Men's Hostel (mainly for research scholars) and MBA & Additional Hostel (mainly for PG students). All hostels are well equipped with basic and modern facilities and attached with adequate guest rooms to accommodate the guests who visit the hostels. A Teachers' hostel situated in the residential campus of the university caters to the needs of teachers visiting the university for official purposes. Twenty two rooms are available for accommodation with a spacious dining hall.
Internet Centre - The Internet Centre is established in order to cater to the needs of the students in browsing and electronic mail. It is highly imperative for the scholars and students to use the Internet in order to download their research and course materials. Students can communicate to the companies through e-mail with regard to their project work and subject related queries. Students are provided with 80 nodes along with one server for using the Internet.
Counselling Centre - The Centre offers counselling services to University students, for enhancing their Educational, Vocational and Personal capabilities. Faculty members from Psychology, Computer Science and Engineering, Animal Sciences, Educational Technology, etc., offer the above services on an honorary basis. Contributing to the career planning and mental health enrichment of the students are the major objectives of the centre.
SDE - School of Distance Education has 125 centres spreading over 23 states as study centres cum spot admission centres, and the number is steadily increasing as more and more evinced interest in starting study centres. The school directly admits candidates and conducts the personal contact programmes at specified Personal Contact Programmes (PCP) centres in Coimbatore. Study centres cum spot admission centres enrol candidates and conduct the Personal Contact Programmes in their centres or at specified regional centres. The study materials prepared in the prescribed format of Distance Education Council (DEC) are provided to the students supplemented by compact discs for hassle free use anywhere at any time without the burden of carrying the course materials. Contemplated to provide video conference based learning facility. It provides various U.G, P.G., Professional Courses and Diplomas in various disciplines.
Scholarships / Fellowships - A number of scholarships are available for BC, MBC, SC / ST candidates admitted to the M.Phil. / Ph.D. full-time programmes in the University Departments. A number of fellowships like University Research Fellowships, Fellowships offered by the University Grants Commission, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) and Junior Research Fellowships and Senior Research Fellowships are available to the students admitted to the Ph.D. full-time programmes in the University Departments.
USIC - University Science Instrumentation Centre provide various centralized sophisticated instrumentation facilities to various departments in the University, affiliated colleges and also to the industrial community in the region.
Facilities:
Travel Desk - Bharathiar University has introduced several services for the benefit of staff and students communities. One among them is the Travel Desk. The function of Travel Desk cater the various needs like booking of Air ticket (Both National and International), Railway and Bus services. It also caters by way of assistance to get the Passport and VISA.
Bank - The Bank of India, has established an extension service counter in behind the administrative building. It functions from 10 am to 4.00 pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. The students of Regular and distance Education programmes can pay their fees in the extension counter. The Bank offers services such as savings account, current account, term deposit, foreign exchange services, Multi Branch Banking (can be operated from 750 branches of Bank of India at National level). The Bank proposes to set up an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) facility very shortly. The main branch of the bank is equipped with the safety lockers ( to keep the valuables). Post Office - There is also a Post-office in campus. This facility is available in behind the administrative building. It functions from 10 am to 5.30 pm. Services such as sale of stamps, registration of letters and parcels, speed post letters, including letters to foreign countries, telegrams, etc. are available.
Academic Staff College - The UGC-Academic Staff College conducts Orientation Programmes, Refresher Courses, Special Programmes/Workshop for the benefit of teachers.
OSSS - Overseas Students Support Services is the first port of call in Bharathiar University for overseas or international students. OSSS will help the overseas students to settle in a new environment and assist with the practicalities of living in India and completing their studies in Bharathiar University. OSSS will help or advise on aspects of University accommodation, counselling, health and employment. The aim of OSSS is to ensure that overseas students get the support they need. OSSS will provide overseas students of Bharathiar University with the information they need to deal with a problem they are facing. OSSS do not deal with the problem directly, but will advise the students and ensure that the students receive the necessary support.
BUWC - Bharathiar University Women's Club conducts free health camps to meet the physical health problems of women. A Women's Care Centre has been started from 28th August 2008 as a part of BUWC. This care centre serves as a place of rest and shelter for the women staff and students of Bharathiar University when they are sick. Women's Care Centre is utilized to arrange meetings for BUWC , to offer counselling for women staff and students and to arrange free medical check up then and there. BUWC functions for the welfare of women. To accomplish this, BUWC has planned several Programmes, seminars and meetings towards the empowerment of women of Bharathiar University.
CM Cell - It has been established recently on the advice of the Government of Tamil Nadu. When students and Public give representations to the Hon'ble Chief Minister they are forwarded to the University for immediate action. The University takes suitable action/gives replies and the same information is sent to the Chief Minister's cell for reference. The University Public Relations Officer is the Nodal Officer for this cell. Every month the Chief Minister's cell invites Nodal Officers for reconciliation and review of the progress in this regard.
Fitness Centre - Bharathiar University Fitness Centre is functioning in the basement of the School of Distance Education Building. This facility is open to all staff, students and outsiders. A separate fitness centre is also available for women. Qualified fitness instructors are available for men and women in both morning and evening on all the days except sundays to guide the persons. The Centre focuses its attention on maintaining and developing Physical fitness, weight reduction and body building. Modern weight machines like nine station gym for upper extremity and six station multigym for lower extremity for pull down, peck deck, arm curl, Abdominal crunch are available for exercising various parts of the body. Other equipments like Tread Mill, Bicycle Ergometer, rolling machine are also available to develop the aerobic fitness.
University Health Centre - It is functioning in the University Health Centre building near the Teachers' Hostel. The teaching and Non-teaching staff (Regular, Contract, Daily Wages) and regular P. G., M. Phil., and Ph. D. students can have medical consultation.
NSS - National Service Scheme's chief objective is the development of the personality through community service. The National Service Scheme of Bharathiar University is functioning with 250 NSS Units in 82 colleges. The total NSS Volunteer strength of the University is 25,000. The University has also introduced National Service Scheme in co-curricular activities under part IV of the U.G. Courses. The NSS cell has organized various seminars and workshops viz, Career Guidance, Empowerment of Women, Girl Child Education and population, AIDS Awareness, Environmental Awareness, Women and Health, Communal Harmony, Leadership Training Programmes, Consumer Awareness, Road Safety, Tree Planting and Blood Donation Camps.
YRC - The Youth Red Cross Zone of the University is the part of Indian Red Cross Society (Tamil Nadu Branch). It provides awareness programmes for first aid, five fighting methods, Voluntary blood donation, Yoga and other physical fitness exercises. It also organizes National, State and Universities Level YRC campus for the students during December/January every year.
Alumni Association - The first meeting of the association had more than 120 Alumni from various disciplines. Subsequently it was decided to meet every quarter. The annual meet has been planned for October/December. The Alumni has brought laurels to the University and has been an important link between the corporate world and the students.
Placement - The School has an excellent placement record. An exclusive placement wing in the School of Management caters to the requirements of the students and gets them offers with attractive compensation packages.

Planning and Development Cell - The Planning and Development Cell of the Bharathiar University has been created to evolve and forward Research Proposals to the CSIR, UGC, DAE and other foreign agencies. All submitted proposals and schemes of the of the University will be routed through this cell and it will follow up the projects. It will also look after all other planning and development activities of the University.
Canteen - There are two Canteens functioning in the University campus and it functions on all working days of the University and also cater to the students of Distance Education, as and when the contact programmes are organized in the campus. The working hours of canteen are 9.00 am to 5.30 pm. Snacks, vegetarian and some times non-vegetarian food items are available for students, staff, parents and visitors.
