Karunya University was founded with the noble vision to raise professionals and leaders of high academic calibre and unblemished character, nurtured with a strong motivation and commitment to serve humanity. The Karunya Institute of Technology was started as a private self-financing engineering college on 4 October 1986. In 2004, the institute was awarded the Deemed to be University status in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India and subsequently renamed as Karunya University under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. 9-3-2000-U3 dated. 23.6.2004 of the Government of India. In the short span of its existence it has moved swiftly ahead to carve a niche for itself as an institution promoting all round excellence. In a nutshell, Karunya is a co-educational, fully residential, Technological University imparting holistic education to develop the body, mind and spirit of the students. The origin of the Institution is amazing. In the year 1981, Late Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran, God's servant received the divine commission to start a Technical University which could turn out outstanding engineers with leadership qualities at the national and global level. Building up such a great Institution was no easy task. The Dhinakarans had to face innumerable trials and tribulations including the tragic death of their dear daughter during the course of this great endeavour. But nothing could stop them from reaching the goal.

All Technical programs conform to prescribed norms of the AICTE (Govt. of India;. B.Ed as per NCTE (Govt. of India) norms. It has 6300 students, fully residential campus in 11 hostels. It has 430 teaching faculty, 220 supporting staff - 23 % with doctorate degree, 35% registered and working towards a doctorate degree The Student/Faculty Ratio is 14.85 ( AICTE Norm 15). It offers UG/PG/Doctoral programs in Engineering, Technology and MBA, MCA, MSc. Karunya University has one of the most beautiful campuses in India. The University is surrounded by an array of green-clad, sky scraping mountains of the Western Ghats. The weather is cool and breezy with the clouds from the Kerala side drifting high over the mountains giving frequent drizzles. The Siruvani river with its crystal clear water has its origin here and it is nature's boon to Coimbatore. Karunya is thus set in a natural environment ideal for a residential institution. During leisure time, one can feast on the mountains, the skies with its rainbow colours and the horizon. One cannot but wonder at the amazing craftsmanship of God Almighty. The peace and tranquillity of the campus is ideal for spiritual and intellectual pursuits.

Facilities

Computer Centre - The University Computer Technology Centre offers world class computing facility to the Karunya community. The computing resources include advanced servers and powerful workstations. A state-of-the-art campus network with fiber optic backbone and a 32 Mbps Leased line Internet connection offer unlimited access of Internet for the students and staff round the clock, for their educational and research needs. The servers include the IBM blade server, IBM X- 365 , IBM server X-346 for Novell Open Enterprise server, IBM server X-235 for Oracle applications, IBM Netfinity 3500 for hosting the KITS website, IBM Netfinity 3000 and 1000 as dedicated mail server and DNS server. In addition we have IBM AS/400e server, HP Net server E800 for MATLAB, Sun Ultra Sparc server for shell programming and Hewlett Packard Sure Store CD-Rom server. The Computer Technology Centre provides e-mail services to the entire Karunya community. Our network is secured through a Watch Guard X-5000 series Firewall. The Computer Technology Centre with a total floor area of 2812 sq.m houses 20 Computer laboratories with centralized air conditioning and adequate uninterruptible power supply.The Karunya campus LAN interconnecting about 1547 computers serve the desktop needs of the students, faculty, and the administrative staff of the University. Desktops in the campus include iMAC, Silicon Graphics, Sun Solaris, Pentium IV (Dual Core and Core 2 duo) etc. In addition to the above computing facility at the educational campus, about 210 computers cater to the needs of the students at the hostels, facilitating them to work on the computers late into the night. The Computer Technology Centre has a stock of latest software such as, AutoCAD 2008, Oracle 10g, SQL Server, Multimedia and Virtual Reality Software, Rational Suite Enterprise, .Net, Novell Open Enterprise server, MatLab, ProE, Ansys, Autodesk packages, Mentor Graphics etc.,

Library - The Central library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of CD-ROM, On-line databases, e-journals, e-books, audio video cassettes, books, journals, project reports etc. Links from the home page will direct you to information on library policies, hours, collections and services. The mission of the Central library is to provide information services and access to bibliographical and full text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of the Institute user community.

Hostels - Karunya University aims at training professionals of high standard with moral calibre. The rules and regulations are framed so as to train them for reaching the goals for which the institution was started. It aims at ensuring harmonious, friendly living among students of various states inculcating self discipline. The hostels should serve as a training ground for a responsible, successful and useful life through development of the body, mind and soul. The Twelve hostels of Karunya University are under the overall administrative control of the Director (Student Residences), who is a Professor of this University. He is assisted by a joint Chief Wardens in his administrative responsibilities . The Finance officer of the University looks after the financial responsibilities.

Bank - A full-fledged Syndicate Bank is available in the campus. Numerous students have account in this bank to perform their monetary transactions. The Bank provides two ATM facilities for 24 hrs availability.

Post Office - A separate Government Post Office (Karunya Nagar Branch) functions on campus that offers the latest Postal Services such as EMS & Speed Post Service.

Hospital - Karunya Rural Community Hospital was started in 1989 with a mission to provide quality healthcare to the all the residents in and around Karunya. Not only does it cater to the medical needs of 4200 students, 300 staff and families resident on Karunya Deemed University campus, but it also strives with a noble vision to reach the backward rural communities who are in desperate need of medical help at a very minimal cost. The Hospital is well-equipped with modern facilities and includes an operation theatre, which has also been certified and approved by the State Family Welfare Unit to perform Family Planning surgeries for the rural poor, who are scattered in as many as 51 villages surrounding the University. Adequate in-patient facilities and a 24-hr ambulance to carry the patients to Coimbatore for secondary and tertiary care are also available. Special facilities in hospital include: Cardiac Monitor, Pulse Oxymeter, Baby Warmer Portable Ultrasound Scanning, Machine Foetal Doppler.

DPD - Department of Personality Development offers students sufficient opportunities and impetuous to develop into dynamic personalities with the holistic character formation. Inculcation of values result in social transformation. The students are given sufficient exposure to the realities of life, to understand and empathise with the poor and needy so that they would develop progressive proclivity to reach out to fellow humans with a tender heart and a helping hand.

Sports - The Karunya sports complex is well known for its best facilitated grounds for various sporting disciplines. The KU has attained quite a reputation in sports activities especially among the professional institutions by winning several prestigious tournaments conducted in various levels. The competitive spirit is encouraged as the University organizes a variety of tournaments of repute, coaching camps and establishment of sporting clubs.

KCRD - Karunya Center For Rural Development is one of the visions of the Karunya University (Established under sec. 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. 9-3-2000-U3 dt. 23.6.2004of the Govt. of India). It is formed to serve the less privileged in the rural communities surrounding it by equipping them with knowledge and familiarity with modern techniques in relevant fields, so as to enable them to earn a living or alternatively to raise their standard of living. Karunya strives to improve the quality of life of neighboring rural communities through direct employment, education and training ,medical help as well as environment-related activities. Towards this end, the Karunya Center for Rural development (KCRD) is set up. Under its auspices, SEESHA (Samithi for Education Environment, Social& Health Action), the social service arm of Karunya implements most of the service programs through the support and active collaboration of the Karunya student body through the dept. of Personality Development(DPD).

CIC - Centre for Industrial Collaboration was established in the year 2001. The Centre effectively interacts with Industries through various innovative and unique programs to impart Application Knowledge to the Students and Faculty.

Scholarships - The college has built up a total amount of Rs. 10 Lakhs to be offered as scholarships, every year apart from the endowments instituted by the individuals in memory of their relatives and in addition to an amount of Rs. 50,000.00 contributed by the alumni association to support the scholarship scheme. The college scholarship is under two categories - Jesus Calls Scholarship and Karunya Scholarship
