National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NITT) was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to cater to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. It was then known as the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli. The College has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Because of this rich experience, this Institution was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Government of India in the year 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NIT-T was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975. National Institute of Technology Trichy is one of the 17 National Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India. NIT-T is also know as NIIT - Trichy or Tiruchy. The Institution offers Under Graduate Courses in Ten Branches and Post Graduate Courses in Twenty One disciplines of Science, Engineering & Technology besides Ph.D. in all the departments. NITT also has a Management and Architecture School. The College has a total campus area of 800 acres. This includes Hostel facilities, Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Centre, fully computerized State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Book Stall, Reprographic Centre, Canteen, Swimming Pool and Co-operative Stores.

Transportation - Trichy is connected by road to Chennai (320 km), Madurai (142 km) and to all major towns in South India by regular bus services.

Facilities
Hostels - There are sixteen boys' and one girls' Hostel. They accommodate 3560 Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Three more Hostels are under construction. Once completed they will be able to accommodate 4280 students. Each Hostel has been provided with a television, two DOT telephones, intercom(s), aquaguard, water cooler and kit for indoor games and outdoor games.
Messes - There are nine Messes in all, eight for boys and one for girls. The Messes are divided to serve both South Indian and North Indian dishes as the student fabric is of all India nature. The students themselves go to the Trichy Gandhi Market 3 times a week, escorted by a Warden, to buy fresh vegetables at a very cheap rate. There is a van for transporting vegetables from the market.
Library - The Institute has a modern Central Library with more than one lakh documents consisting of technical books, reports, standards and back volumes of journals. The Library subscribes to 179 periodicals (print) plus 1000+ (e-Journals) besides a holding of 15943 bound volumes of journals (back numbers). The Library also contains 15,000 books in the Book Bank. Besides the Central Library, each Department has its own Library. The open access system is observed in the Library. The Institute is holding membership with British Council Library, Chennai. The Institute is also holding membership with DELNET, New Delhi for Interlibrary Loan. The CD-ROM Workstation and the Audio-Visual section are recent additions to the Library.
Octagon - The Computer Centre is called Octagon. This centre serves the campus-wide LAN in close association with the user departments. This LAN caters to totally 4000 users across the campus (1500 users at the same time) and has a 10 Gbps fibre optic backbone. It also acts as a resource centre to supplement classroom instructions with Laboratory sessions. The Octagon & Annex building accommodates the Central computing facilities, it has a server room with 25 high-end servers and there are 6 laboratories, 4 in Octagon building and 2 in the Annex building with totally 400 high-end computers. Its laboratories includes Lab 1 with 39 Pentium based PCs, Lab 2 with 52 Pentium 4 based PCs, Lab 3 also known as RECAL-Sun Lab with 33 Sun Computers, Graphics Lab with 30 Pentium 4 based PCs, R & D Lab with 10 Pentium 4 based PCs. Annex building located next to Octagon has two big labs each with 99 computers. Octagon is kept open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year, also has centralized 2 x 60 kVA redundant Uninterrupted Power Supply with 200 kVA standby Power Generators and Central Air Conditioning. NITT is connected to the Internet via 40 Mbps (1:1) leased line from Software Technology Park of India (STPi).
Credit for Sports - In the revised credit - based curriculum, NSO (National Sports Organisation) activity carries credits in the undergraduate engineering education. By offering credits on power with academic ones, the students are encouraged to take up sports pursuits. The Sports Centre offers the facilities required to train and evaluate the students.
Stipends / Fellowships - Limited number of GATE stipends is available, subject to Institute / AICTE guidelines. Financial support to M.S. candidates (Full-Time) will be offered in areas of sponsored research. Limited number of Institute stipends for M.S. Candidates (Full Time) is under consideration. Limited number of Ph.D. (Full- Time) stipends is available, subject to Institute / MHRD guidelines.
Shopping Centre - To cater to the needs of the students and other residents, the Institute has a Shopping Complex within its premises.

Hospital - The Institute provides Medical Facilities through its own Hospital. It has 2 full-time doctors, 10 Specialists and Super specialists as visiting Consultants.

Sports Centre - The Sports Centre is a multi-facility multi-disciplinary sports complex aimed at developing well-rounded personalities of students. The building has an indoor stadium with two shuttle courts and a fitness centre. The Fitness Centre has a wooden flooring housing many exercise machines such as multi-station gym, tread mill, stairs, air walker, rowing machine, exercycle and so on. These are used by the students, staff and other residents of the campus.
Outdoor Stadium - The Outdoor Stadium has a 400M track. The Cricket Ground here hosts matches for the city league. The Campus is dotted with two football grounds, one hockey field, two volleyball courts, two basketball courts, three tennis courts and two ball badminton courts. Besides each Hostel has separate playgrounds and indoor games such as table tennis and caroms.
Aqua Sports Complex - It houses a 25M swimming pool. The Institute also employs coaches for men and women.
Training and Placement - The Department provides expert counselling to every student define his/her career interest. It provides updated database and job profile of the companies and thus helps each student analyse and choose company of his interest. The Department also has in its active file a database of nearly 1500 companies. It organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfil its commitment of a job to every aspirant. About 125 - 150 companies visit the campus every year.
Alumni - RECAL, the Alumni Association of NIT Trichy provides a platform for bringing together the alumni of RECT/NITT and enabling them to interact - more often and comfortably. For more info - http://alumni.nitt.edu/

The Institute has signed MOUs with Industries and Institutions in India and abroad to promote collaborative research and consultancies. MOU signed with BHEL, it's neighbouring industrial campus provides an opportunity for our young researchers to use the infrastructure in BHEL. BHEL offers scholarships for such research scholars pursuing PhD and MS.
The MOU signed with our then parent Bharadhidasan University looks forward collaborative research activities to be undertaken in both campuses.
Another MOU has been signed with NIMS Japan for the collaborative research in the area of nanotechnology.
MOUs with IBM and HP, leading software industries have been executed. HP has offered a Chair position to monitor the ongoing HP projects undertaken by Institute's students.
Apart from the ongoing projects, Institute's faculty members have obtained 20 new major projects funded by DST, CSIR and AICTE with a total cost of Rs 2.5 Crores.
