Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology - PMIST is a Private Deemed University. It is also known as Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology. PMU has its origin from Periyar Maniammai College of Technology for Women which was established in 1988. It was established by the Periyar Maniammai Educational and Charitable Society, Chennai. The college was named after the great social reformer of the twentieth century, E.V. Ramasamy, popularly known as Thanthai Periyar and his philanthropic wife Annai Maniammaiar. The college was setup especially for women so that they could have increased access to higher education in Science and Technology and also to encourage their participation in social, national and global development. The College was started with the approval of All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and initially affiliated to Bharathidasan University and later to Anna University, Chennai from 2001. Since August 17, 2007 it has been functioning as Deemed to be University with the approval of the UGC and Ministry of Human Resources, New Delhi.
The Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology Trust has in its ambit a number of colleges, schools at Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Chennai and New Delhi in its own premises. The Periyar Maniammai University is located on a land area of 216 acres, which once were barren and dry with scarce population in rural area. The built-up areas in the main campus at Vallam are around 90,000 Sq.m and in Chennai campus it is 13,000 Sq.m.

Two People – In front of the torch are two picture’s of Thanthai Periyar and Annai Maniammaiyar
b) Torch – In the background, there is a burning torch representing the reforms proposed by the two people for eradicating superstitions and social evils and also informing the world that they are the torch bearers of social causes in this part of the world.
c) Words - The words - Think, Innovate and Transform inscribed at the pedestal of the emblem stand for the watch words that guided the life of Thanthai Periyar and they are the golden rules governing the curricular and extracurricular activities of the University.
Location - The University is situated at 10 km towards west from Thanjavur and 45 km on the east from Tiruchirapalli and is easily accessible by road, rail and air

Facilities at Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science and Technology - PMIST
Hostels – PMIST has four hostels, three of them - Annai Nagammaiyar, Vittobai and Swarna Renganathan hostel are for women and they can accommodate around 2000 women students. The fourth one is - Chakravarthi hostel for men which can accommodate 600 students. Hostels are located within the campus.

Library - The Arjun Singh library is the Central Library and is housed at the Knowledge Centre of PMU. It spreads over to three floors with an area of 25, 902 m2. The library has about 78693 Volumes of books, about 1480 CDs, 578 Video Cassettes, 225 Audio Cassettes and about 559 National and International Journals. The library also facilitates a Book Bank apart from other facilities.
Internet – The entire campus is provided with Wi-fi connectivity with an average uplink capacity of 50 Mbps and downlink capacity of 100 Mbps
Periyar Paper Re-processing Unit – It is available for Paper recycling. Sources for the paper recycling unit are retrieved from the University and reinforcing materials (cotton waste) are added to strengthen the quality of the paper
Zero-Carbon Campus - PMIST campus has around 4,500 shrubs and plant varieties, 26,000 native trees and endangered trees. Such thick foliage of vegetation releases oxygen of 8.4 tonnes per day and CO2 absorption is around 1.6 tonnes per day. Alternative building materials like hollow blocks, interlocking blocks, paver blocks are manufactured in the campus using innovative technologies to meet its own infrastructural requirements. The University always keeps pace with the shifts in technology like transition from fluorescent lamps to CFL and now to LED.
Student Association – The PMIST START (Students Taking Active Role Together) group along with CUII organizes various personality and skill development programmes for endorsing placement. Various 32 Clubs and Societies organise different activities and programmes encouraging student’s extracurricular activities.

CUII - Centre for University Industry Interaction organises various activities, like Placement, Training and University-Industry coordination. PMU also permits local Colleges / Universities to participate in the Campus interviews arranged in its premises.

Periyar Technology Business Incubator – The Incubator provides training to the students for developing viable businesses’. It also provides space, instruments and enables financial support.
