The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997. The University is named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a prominent Indian legal specialist of the 20th century. he University offers a variety of specializations, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the postgraduate level, the University offers advanced degrees through its Departments of Law. The advanced degree programs offered include Business Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law & Legal Order, and Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Administration. Apart from the teaching and academic research initiatives, the University has both state-sponsored and private law colleges as affiliates, differing from the other law schools in the country.

Endowments / Scholarships / Medals - Some of these are - A) Surana & Surana Endowment Scholarships - Surana & Surana Endowment Scholarships are awarded to two SC/ST students, studying in the School of Excellence in Law, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, annually based on merit. B) Sri. V. Sridevan Endowment Scholarship - Sri. V. Sridevan Endowment Scholarship will be awarded to a student getting first mark in the M.L. Intellectual Property Law Degree Course, at the Convocation of the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University.
Library - University Library has 9540 books and is subscribing 55 National and International journals. At present the library has a good collection of books in various sub-disciplines of Law. In addition, Books on various subjects like information Technology, English, Political Science, Sociology, History, Biographies etc. are also available. It has a good reference collection viz. AIR Manual , American Jurisprudence, Corpus Juris Secundum, Halsbury’s Laws of England, International Law Reports, U S Supreme Court Reports, Words and Phrases. The back volumes of 65 journals are also available. The Library has a good collection of CD ROMs like Supreme Court Cases – Full –Text, AIR Supreme Court – 1950-2004, AIR High Courts on CD – ROM 1985 –2004, Legal 2000 Statutes of India: Central Acts and multimedia on Mahatma Gandhi, Intellectual Property Rights: Key to new wealth. The University library also subscribes to Online Legal Database www.lexisnexis.com, www.manupatra.com and www.indialawsite.com . To avail library facilities in the British Council Library and American Information Resource Center Inter Library Loan Facilities, the university library has obtained Instructional Membership in these libraries. Other Library facilities include audio cassettes of Linguaphone to improve the fluency of the students in English Language, educational videotapes for the students to learn effectively, 15 computers for the students to browse the legal websites through out the world and CD – ROMs for effective learning with 1 mbps broadband connection and it also provides the photocopy facilities for the students.
Research - The Law University has extended the research programme for Ph. D Degree to practising advocates and serving judges on part-time basis.
Placement Cell - As part of internship programme, students are given inputs to the needs of the Industry. Lot of students in the 6th and 7th Semester have been absorbed by various law firms and few serving to the Hon’ble High Court Judges, Chennai. It also provides better avenues apart from professional practices, joining hands with Corporate, IT mayos, MNC’s.
