  • Basically there are two types of Advertising:

    • Commercial Advertising - It is mainly aimed to generate increased consumption of certain products or services through branding, which involves the repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate related qualities with the brand in the minds of consumers.
    • Non-Commercial Advertising - It is aimed at generating awareness and publicity by political parties, interest groups, religious organizations and governmental agencies. Non-profit organizations generally rely on free modes of persuasion, such as a public service announcements.

    Broadly speaking an Advertiser deals with a broad spectrum of activities depending on his area of expertise. An Advertiser deals with media, marketing, management, planning, research, creativity etc.

    • Candidates with a formal management or advertising/mass communication are mostly required by Advertising Agencies. Preference is given for MBA's for posts in the market research, client servicing and media planning departments.
    • General BA with a good command over language of communication plus knowledge of designing packages like Photoshop, coral draw or fine arts is the requirement, in the creative department.
    • Advertising is also offered as a subject for the graduate degree course in mass communication studies at certain institutions for which minimum qualification is 10+2. There are also specialised courses in advertising/mass communication at diploma level and post graduate level for which basic qualification is graduation.
