The surgeon is a physician qualified and trained enough to diagnose the disease and perform the invasive surgery for the treatment of the same. For performing these kinds of surgeries the surgeon is required to have deep knowledge of human anatomy, emergency and intensive care, immunology, metabolism, nutrition, pathology, physiology, shock and resuscitation, and wound healing.

Progress in medical science and development of highly advanced and sophisticated surgical instruments have made it possible for the medical experts to (Surgeon) treat the human body just like any other complex working machine and repair and replace the damaged parts with surgical operations.

To become a successful surgeon there is a need of a lot of hard work, dedication, patience and above all a strong will and desire to serve the society as they spend most of their day standing for long periods and that too in irregular hours.  If the prospective candidate has all these qualities then he is fit to become a Surgeon in his selected field of specialization.  

 

How to become a surgeon?

To become as a surgeon the aspiring candidates have to follow the below-given steps:-

Step 1

The first step towards becoming a surgeon is to get admission in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course in a reputed Medical Collage-like AIIMS, GMCH, AFMC Pune etc to name a few.

 

Surgeon Eligibility

1. Educational Qualification

To be eligible to join MBBS course one should be 10+2 Class pass with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) as main subjects at this level. However for getting admission to some good medical college minimum percentage of marks in +2 is 60%. Interested candidate has to appear in an entrance test conducted by the various state and Independent bodies like PMT, taken by Punjab Government and CBSE-PMT (pre-medical test) taken by the Central board to admit candidates in various medical institutions attached with it. Admission is granted according to the rank of the candidate in the entrance exam.

Step 2

After completing this four and a half year of (MBBS) Degree course one years and six months compulsory training one have to go for Master of Surgery (MS) Degree. Some of the variously available specializations for a prospective surgeon are:-

  2. General surgery
  3. Gynecologic oncology
  4. Ophthalmic
  5. Orthopaedic
  6. Pediatric
  7. Urology
  8. Colon and rectal
  9. Gynaecology and Obstetrics
  10. Neurological
  11. Oral and maxillofacial
  12. Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat)
  13. Plastic and Maxillofacial
  14. Vascular

After getting the requisite qualification and mandatory training in medical college and hospital, surgeons can choose to work for some Government or Private Hospital or opt for private practice in their area of specialization.

 

Surgeon Job Description

Surgeon along with Anesthesiologists and the technical staff are responsible to do the surgeries to corrects physical deformities, repairs bone tissue after injuries, or performs preventive surgeries on patients with a life-threatening disease like tumours etc. As this work involves the risk of the life of a human being thus the surgeons need to be very efficient as they hardly get any chance to rectify their wrongdoing.  

 

Surgeon Career Prospects

There is a lot of scope for the physician joining medical surgery as a career in the present scenario. Apart from joining a Government hospital as an associate/intern surgeon, the expert surgeon can find lucrative placements with huge salaries in corporate hospitals. With a boom in the healthcare sector, there are other areas too where surgeons are highly in demand. Surgeon Salary

Surgeon  Salary can be anywhere between Rs.35,000 to Rs.40,000 depending upon the competence and area of specialization. There is a lot of money in private practice as well and it only gets better for candidates as they win the trust of the patients and the goodwill is spread by word of mouth to attract more patients to the hospitals/clinic.
