About Bharathidasan University

Bharathidasan University was established in February 1982 under the Act of Government of Tamil Nadu as an affiliating University. It was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1985. It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Commonwealth Universities. It is named after the great revolutionary Tamil Poet, Bharathidasan (1891-1968). The motto of the University "We will create a brave new world" has been framed from Bharathidasan's poetic words. There are more than 193 Colleges affiliated to the University, including 21 Government and Science Colleges, Education Colleges, Fine Arts Colleges, constituent colleges of this University, 20 Aided Colleges of Arts & Science, Colleges of Fine Arts, 138 Self Financing Arts & Science Colleges and the Colleges of Education, 13 Approved Institutions and 1 Uni Faculty Institution. The affiliating jurisdiction is over 7 Districts with 104 Arts & Science and Fine Arts Colleges and 13 Approved Institutions. Eighteen of the affiliated colleges are autonomous. Among the affiliated colleges, more than 50% are offering PG programmes and 25% are offering M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes. A good number of them are nationally recognized for quality education. The programmes offered through affiliated colleges diversified and number more than 250. Besides the main campus, there is a city campus at Khajamalai, housing Department of Economics, Department of Education, Technology, Computer Science, the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), the Bharathidasan University Technology Park (BUTP) and a few more Departments. In UAE the Bharathidasan Campus is facilitated by International English Institute for Language Studies,(IEILS). The Registered office of IEILS in UAE is at Al Ain main street. The Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) is located in the B.H.E.L. Campus, with whose partnership, the BIM has emerged as one of the top Business Schools of the country.

Facilities

Hostels - The University provides separate hostel facilities, with 3 for women and 4 for men with furnished accommodation and mess facilities

University Library - The Library Book Collection comprises 81222 books, number of journals, periodicals, thesis, CD/DVD's etc. There are 59845 books in various Department Libraries. University also provides various other services like WEBOPAC, Instant Librarian Chat Service, Wi-Fi facility, Weblog, Institutional Repository etc.

UGC Infonet - UGC-Infonet programme provides electronic access to scholarly literature over the Internet in all areas of learning to the University sector in India. The programme is wholly funded by the UGC.

Central Workshop - Workshop consists of one machine shop laboratory and a glass blowing laboratory.
 
University Centres

  • CDE - Centre for Distance Education offers many as 66 programmes including 14 UG, 24 PG, 7 Diploma / PG Diploma MCA and MBA programmes. It offers programmes in Computer Science and Applications, Information Technology, E-Commerce, Bank Management, Financial Management, Co-Operation, Library and Information Science, Animation etc. It conducts theory and practical classes on Saturdays and Sundays. It's Personal Contact Programme Centres (PCP) are located in 41 Towns / Cities. CDE is located in Khajamalai Campus, Tiruchirappalli.
  • BDU BDC - Bharathidasan University Business Development Centre is an independent unit. BDC facilitates many reputed Industries / Institutions to sign the MoU with the University on various aspects designated to function with a band of dedicated scientific and technocrats drawn from technology providers/financial institutions and industries. It also offers Programmes under Off-campus education in collaboration with Specialized agencies / institutes.
  • CKR - Centre for Knowledge Repository provides comprehensive access to scholarly digital content (Journals, e-books, articles, Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), video & audio resources) to every student, faculty and staff.
  • Bharathidasan Studies - The centre is involved in the work of Bharathidasan, a great revolutionary Tamil poet.
  • Canadian Studies - The Centre enables scholars, teachers and researchers to learn more about Canadian Literature, Criticism, Economics, Sociology, Feminism etc.
  • CGIT - Centre for Geographic Information Technologies provides 1 year certificate course in GI Technologies.
  • High-Pressure Research Centre - The centre has established high pressure, low temperature and high magnetic field facility to conduct electrical resistivity, magneto-resistance etc.
  • Human Consciousness Yogic Centre - It is involved in the promotion of yoga education and practice.
  • MGDC - Mahathma Gandhi DorenKamp Center for alternatives to the use of animals in life science education. The Centre encourages the use of alternatives to animals by training teachers, researchers, students and the other stake-holders in the use of virtual, in vitro and in silico methods in the place of animals in Schools, Universities and Research/Testing Laboratories across India.
  • NFMC - National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria has been set up to update cyanobacterial genome sequences to enhance the biotechnological exploitation of cyanobacteria and carry out gene sequencing for Indian marine cyanobacterial isolates.
  • CNLD - Centre for Non-Linear Dynamics is involved in research and studies related to Non-linear Dynamics
  • CNT - Centre for Nano-Science and Technology is involved in fabrication and probing of nano-structured materials.
  • CPT - Centre for Pheromone Technology works to use Pheromones for pest management, artificial insemination, captive breeding etc.
  • Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy - It works on issues concerning SC/ST, Minority Religious groups, and other marginalized and socially excluded sections of the society.
  • UIC - University Informatics Centre caters to the information technology needs of students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff of the University.
  • CUIC - Centre for University Industry Collaboration conducts Campus Placement for U.G. and P.G Degree Students, Interaction between University and Industry and Training Programmes for students.
  • CYDS - Centre for Youth Development Studies supplies necessary academic inputs to the student community of the colleges and departments of the university.

IECD - Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development equips the students to establish and run enterprises of their own involving managerial and organisational skills. This is achieved through it's flexible skill-based training Centre. The centre caters to the current as well as dropped out and passed-out students with vocational skills leading to self-employment and eventually enabling them to emerge as successful entrepreneurs in the respective field.

Sports - The university has a spacious play ground adjoining the hostels with a 400 meter standard athletic track, an outdoor sports complex with play grounds for ball badminton, volley ball, hand ball and basket ball; this also includes a yoga centre which runs a part time course on yoga.

UGC ASC - UGC Academic Staff College provides Orientation Courses, Refresher Courses, Need based Courses, Principals workshop and workshop for the Controller of Examinations.

SCGRC - Students Counselling and Grievance Redressal Cell acts as an Information Centre and guides the students to meet out their academic needs. Telephonic Information Service is also rendered through the cell.

BUTP - Bharathidasan University Technology Park has been set up to encourage young entrepreneurs incubate innovative concepts.  BUTP has the Software Development Centre for training IT professionals and Computorium for moulding the IT students to make them equipped professionals.

University Health Centre - It has a Full Time Medical Officer, an attender and a sanitary worker. The Health Centre building has a waiting room, a four bedded ward, a consulting room and a toilet. It conducts periodic health check-ups for the Staff and Students from time to time.

Other facilities - These include high speed internet access in each department, a Computer Centre, a Central Departmental Store, State Bank of India branch and a Canteen.

NSS - National Service Scheme organises various programmes and camps to provide social service to humanity.

BARD-FEST - It is the annual cultural program,  conducted in the campus where in students from different colleges participate.

Alumni Association - It works with the present students and staff to promote healthy functioning of the University and also contribute to the campus development.

  • Accredited with A’ grade By NAAC.
  • The university provides 5 year and 6 year integrated programs which admit students who are qualified at plus two level exposing them to university education at an early stage in academic career. These integrated programs provide a fast track for early graduation. Also they facilitate to break off with an under graduate degree or for lateral entry for a PG degree for fast learners. These programs also aim to instil fortitude in the young minds to take up research and competitive examinations like NET / SLET / GATE.
