Past Perfect Tense

Identification of the Tense: - The event has surely completed in the past. Ex:-

  1. Rajiv had gone to school.
  2. I had played football.
  3. He had not studied.
  4. Had they lived here?

There is completeness and surety in all of the above given sentences.

Usage:- In Present Perfect tense we usually use 

(i) Third form of the verb + had (with plural as well as singular sentence)

Explanation:-

In first sentence "Rajiv had gone to the school."
Rajiv singular noun is followed by had and third form of the verb gone.

In second sentence "I had played football"
the pronoun is followed by had and third form of the verb played.

In the third sentence "He had not studied"
In this negative sentence had is followed by not which itself is followed by third form of verb studied.

In the fourth sentence"Had they lived here?"
Being an interrogative sentence pronoun they is preceeded by had and followed by the third form of the verb lived.

Use of Past Perfect Tense:-

to express an action completed before a certain moment in the past.

  • At 9 p.m. all the shops had closed.
  • At 17 years he had passed his B.Sc. examination.

to express an action in the past which was completed before another action, also in the past.

  • We had locked all the rooms before we left the house.
  • I had already known the result when he rang me up.

to express unfulfilled desire of the past.

  • I wish I had listened to my mother’s advice. (but I did not listen)
  • If only he had not wasted his time. (but he wasted)

to express impossible (unfulfilled) conditions of the past.

  • If you had worked hard, you would have passed.
  • If he had left earlier, he would have reached in time.
