The process, techniques and usage of creating various products from Ceramics is known as Ceramic Technology. Ceramic technology courses in India are mostly offered by engineering institutes. Ceramic Technology is also known as Ceramic Engineering. A ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic material prepared by heating and subsequent cooling. Ceramic materials may have a crystalline or partly crystalline structure, or may be amorphous example - a glass. Ceramic materials have become increasingly important due to their better tailor made properties, longer life and lower costs. Ceramics have varied uses which include in the manufacture of knives, bulletproof vests, cockpits of some military airplanes, dental implants, synthetic bones, watch cases etc.

Ceramic Engineers deals with the study of the properties, manufacture, design and applications of ceramic materials. The special characters of ceramic materials have varied usage in electrical engineering, materials engineering, chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. The products of technical ceramics include tiles used in the Space Shuttle program, gas burner nozzles, ballistic protection, nuclear fuel uranium oxide pellets, bio-medical implants, jet engine turbine blades, and missile nose cones.

    • Technical - It deals with the development of ceramic engine which would replace the present diesel, gasoline and turbo engines, tiles used in the Space Shuttle program, gas burner nozzles, ballistic protection, nuclear fuel uranium oxide pellets, bio-medical implants, jet engine turbine blades and missile nose cones. It is also known as Engineering, Advanced, Special and Fine Ceramics in Japan.

    • To produce new ideas and to suggest solutions to difficult problems.
    • Discover new ways to use ceramics in varied industries.

    Basic Requirements

    For a diploma in ceramic engineering, one must clear the 10th Std. board exam successfully with at least 50% marks. Various polytechnics offer diploma in various disciplines of engineering. To be eligible for bachelor's degree course i.e. B.E. or B. Tech., one must clear the 12th std. board exam with at least 50% marks (60% for IITs) in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths as compulsory subjects. Several states and IITs have an entrance exam for admission into engineering colleges in other states grant admission based on marks scored in 12th Std. exam, particularly in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Diploma holders can also get direct admission into second year of engineering in the same stream in which they have completed their diploma.

    Indian Institute of Ceramics - The Associate Membership Examination of the institute is generally held in October/November. The examination consists of theoretical papers and practical and viva voce examinations. The minimum qualification requirement is a B.Sc. degree or a Diploma in Ceramics with two years of professional experience in the field of ceramics. The B.Sc. degree holders must have passed the examination with Mathematics together with Physics, Chemistry, and Zoology. The examinations are held in Chennai, Gudur and Calcutta.

    Ceramic Engineers experienced in both scientific and production aspects of the profession are great assets to firms using ceramic materials. Ceramic Engineers also work in the nuclear field as ceramic fuel materials make nuclear power generation possible. The electronics industry is also a growth area for this technology, as ceramics are used as insulators for transistors and integrated circuits. Refractory ceramics are required in the refining of iron and aluminium and this industry is especially in need of this type of worker.

    Ceramic Engineers plays a vital role as fiber optics is used in today's telecommunication and medical industries. The largest producers of engineered ceramics—and largest employers of ceramic engineers include AVX, CeramTec, CoorsTek, Corning, EDO, Kohler, Kyocera, Morgan Crucible, Murata, Saint-Gobain and 3M. So job prospective abroad is another major area of employment.
