Discipline can be defined as the process of teaching the type of behaviour that is acceptable and what type is not acceptable or may be said as training to act in accordance with rules. In other words, discipline teaches a person to follow rules and may involve punishment for breaking disciplinary rules and, more importantly, rewards for following the discipline. Discipline is systematic instruction aimed at training a person towards various rules and teaching to follow them and making aware of the punishment that would come along with the non-obedience of the rules.
The term discipline focus that all our actions should be done in perfect accordance with certain principle or rules and laid down procedures, guiding us towards the right path and forbidding from the wrong behaviour which may attract punishment. Hence discipline produces obedience or self-controlled behaviour to the orders of various predefined rules or a proper authority. In every sphere of life, discipline is of a great importance. Discipline is the backbone of human’s character and without proper discipline, it is difficult for a person to achieve something in his life that makes him happy or proud. Discipline is something that a person learns from his childhood.
It would not be wrong to say that it is a habit that one acquires from his environments, or by the way of training. Children must be trained to observe and appreciate discipline from their early years. Their habits, manners, movements, speech- everything should be guided by the term of discipline so that they come out with a good personality later in their life. Discipline in the family life is very important. A child learns most from his family during the early years of his life. If everyone in the family follows discipline then only one is able to appreciate and accept the blessings of discipline in civil life also. Discipline is a very important habit that everyone should possess as a civilized and responsible citizen of any country.
It would not be wrong to say that discipline is the key-note of the worldly order, and also that the universe rests on discipline. The planets moving in their orbit is a perfect example of discipline. If they do not orbit in the proper discipline they may collide with each other leading to huge destruction. River flowing in particular direction, and the arrival of seasons one after the other in series are all examples of disciplines and are of a great example of the value for discipline, if these start breaking discipline it would lead to great disorder and same is the case with humans breaking rules. If there was no following of rules, the world would have been a hell of chaos and confusion. If the people did not obey the laws of the country, the world would have been a melting pot, if there is no traffic discipline then there would be a large number of accidents taking place whole day, everyone driving anywhere they feel like would lead to a lot of confusion.
Discipline needs to be maintained during your whole life. Discipline is directly related to the proper functioning of everything, at home, everyone has to observe discipline. If good children are to be raised then parents need to follow discipline and also teach their children to do so if there is no discipline in the home, it is really difficult to raise a healthy well behaved home. A family, where there is no discipline, is just like a hell; hence it becomes very important to enforce discipline on children at home. They should be made to realize that discipline is a blessing and indiscipline is a real curse, whereas following discipline leads to on the other hand indiscipline leads to unhappiness and disgrace. The home is the building block to teach the value of discipline.
Self-discipline lies in restraining our desires and ugly impulses. Although discipline is not merely associated with punishment at the hand of authority for wrongdoing, the external discipline is nevertheless very important, as an essential part in training the individual to be self-disciplined (by means of punishments, rewards and warnings). Self-discipline is necessary and very important both for the sake of the individual as well as society at large. The external discipline is necessary, for example, in schools, in order to induce the recalcitrant student to concentrate on his studies and observe proper behaviour as well as to protect the other students from a corrupting and disruptive influence. Punishment may sometimes seem to be harsh but it is justified by the miscreant's guilt and is necessary to teach the importance of discipline. A failure to impose discipline leads to the proliferation of indiscipline and the influence of bullies and lawbreakers. The lack of discipline in our society is reflected in the increasing numbers of people who resort to unparliamentary behaviour when provoked.
Discipline is something more than punishment, at the hand of authority, for non-obedience of rules or wrongdoing. The undisciplined man is a slave of passion, luxury and sloth. He entertains dreams on a large scale but the reality of his existence is sordid. On the other hand, the disciplined man is a free man who is not the slave of anything that may force him to break rules. His judgment is sound because he is experienced in responsible judgment and possesses control over his senses. His thoughts are independent. He is able to differentiate between that which seems good and that which is actually good. Discipline is very closely related to hard work. Discipline makes it possible for a man to endure the rigour of hard work. Discipline directs a person to work, making it fruitful and excellent and achieves goals. On the other hand, discipline is fruitless without work.
School is the basic building block in the life of a student. This is a time when a student can easily be moulded into a good personality. Students go to school not just to learn but to build their overall personality. Though learning discipline starts at home right from his birth, there is much more need for it in schools. Schools play an important role in nursing virtues, values and teaching importance of discipline. Discipline whether at the time of assembly, in the classroom, on the playground and elsewhere in the school is all important and mandatory in school. At school teachers are to be disciplined first, as the one who cannot control oneself, cannot control others or even ask to obey rules if not obeying himself. Students emulate teachers in all ways. It is more so in the matter of discipline. They observe discipline by acceptance not by force and just cannot be forced upon them.
It is a role of every parent to help their child become self-reliant, responsible, respectful, and self-controlled. Schools, relatives, churches, health care professionals, and others can help in overall development of a child, but it is the parents from whom the child learns most, the primary responsibility for discipline rests with parents. It is the parents with whom child starts to interact first and learn most from them. It is the role and duty of every parent to guide their ward in such a sense that they become disciplined and well behaved and gain a respectful position in society. An authoritative parent has clear expectations and consequences and is affectionate toward their Childs behaviour and actions. The authoritative parent allows for a bit flexible and collaborative problem-solving attitude with the child when dealing with early behavioural challenges. This is the most effective form the point of view of parenting.
Every parent has some expectations from their children, but sometimes fails to show affection towards their child and is to some extent a bit hesitant to be strict with their children. The parent may give an excuse say things like, "that because I'm the mother, that's why I just can’t be strict to my child or can’t punish them for being wrong", but ultimately it is their child who will suffer in the long run. This is a less effective form of parenting. Hence it is very important to accept challenges as a parent and guide your child towards a disciplined life and understand your responsibility as a parent, to help your child become self-reliant, respectful, and self-controlled.
As some author rightly said, “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” Don’t just expect children to do what you say, parents need to make them understand well the need for discipline and how important it is for children to be disciplined to achieve something in life. Those who learn to obey rules and conduct their life accordingly are happy but whereas those who are unable to appreciate the value of discipline and violate mostly remain unhappy and suffer because of the punishment associated.
Discipline is mandatory, both for the teacher as well as the students. A teacher without discipline in his life can never be an ideal teacher, no matter how hard he/she may try to be. Discipline is the most important quality a teacher or a leader must possess. A teacher is the leader of the whole class and must possess and maintain an intellectual behaviour and a high order moral discipline. No matter how well qualified or scholarly quality a teacher possess, but if in his personal life he is undisciplined, he will never be able to command students, able to win their trust and heart and gain the respect and obedience of students. In India where almost 50% of the population consists of young people disciplined students are the pillars of a nation's strength and with their strength and hard work they can take a nation to the great heights of progress, and in achieving these most important roles is of teacher and their parents. Hence it is very important for teachers also to realize the need and importance of disciplines in their life and teach the same to their students as well. For an effective disciplined system a teacher must take care of the following facts:
Conclusion
Discipline is basically abiding by or following certain rules and regulations or norms of social life. Discipline is probably the most difficult and unpleasant part of any student as well as educator's job. When instructors effectively communicate rules, set high expectations and provided frequent feedback, the need for discipline will likely be infrequent. However, sometimes action is occasionally required to correct a situation where a student has broken the rules or is intending to do so, or is not putting in the required amount of effort. Most of the time approaches to discipline are negative and punishing which may result in bad feelings among the students. A positive approach to discipline involves a process designed to solve performance problems and encourage good performance with rewards. The basic idea behind the positive discipline approach is that when a student is treated as an adult who must solve their problem, rather than as a child who must be punished, the student is more likely to respond positively and correct their problem.
Not only in school, but discipline is to be followed everywhere in life. At home also it is really important to be disciplined and parents, relatives and other family members play an important part in the life of a child to teach him how and why to be in discipline. A person mastering the art to be disciplined always becomes successful in every walk of life.
