What is leadership? Talking about it literally, leadership is the ability to lead a group or we can simply say leadership is to be a leader. In a deep context, leadership is an influence on the people. It is a motivation. The leader has a great influence on the people’s minds. The leader is the one who motivates people. Leadership is organizing a group of people. Leadership involves the clear vision of the task to be done in a group along with the ability to share that vision with the other members. Leadership involves the ability to make sound decisions for you and even for others. Today there are many fields which require good leadership capability in their employees. Leadership is the most required in the field of business. The higher posts like CEO, president, vice president, chairman or the director require people with the best leadership abilities. As these people have to manage the whole business and the employees in the company, they need to be really good leaders.

What are the different Leadership Qualities?

Good leadership requires certain qualities. A good leader is the one who possesses all these qualities. The different leadership qualities are:

  • Confidence: A good leader needs to be very confident. He should have full confidence in himself as well as his planning, his view, and motives. A person who is confident enough draws the trust of the people following him. The confidence of the leader motivates the team members. Moreover, a confident person draws attention from everyone around him. Everyone gets impressed by a person’s confidence level. Thus, the person gets more team members.
  • Honesty: The leader is responsible for his team members. The success and failures of the team members depend on the leader. Therefore, the leader should be very honest to his team members. The leader should not hide anything from his team members. The leader should honestly tell the team members about any kind of circumstances they may face in the near future and also about the profits and the losses the team may have to face. The language and the words used by him should be understandable to all the people in the audience.
  • Commitment: A leader should be committed towards his work. If he has planned a goal to be achieved, he should work hard along with his team members to achieve that goal. If he will be committed towards his work, it will leave a good impression on his team members making them more responsible for their work.
  • Optimistic: A leader should never be a pessimist. The negative thinking of the leader can demoralize the whole team. A demoralized team will not be able to do any profit. If the leader will think positively, it will motivate the team members and will increase their productivity. In case of huge losses or bankruptcy, the positive attitude of the leader motivates the team members to work hard and fight against the losses. It will be an assurance to them that everything will be fine soon.
  • Respectful: To take respect, one has to give respect. Everyone likes a person who respects them. If the team leader respects his team members, they will be happy with him. Even more, people would like to work under his leadership.
  • Rewarding: A leader should reward any good work done by his team members. He should appreciate every good thing. It will motivate the team members to do more efforts.

What are negative Leadership Qualities?

Qualities may not always be good, they may be bad also. Some qualities are such that they are good for one situation and bad for another. Qualities need to be developed according to the purpose or situation. There are some qualities which show that you are not a good leader. They are:

  • Arrogance: Arrogance is showing off the abilities a person has. It is proving yourself to be superior to others. It is being overconfident. A person who is arrogant can never be a good leader. No one will want to work under his leadership. An arrogant is always disliked. He cannot lead a team properly.
  • Selfishness: A person who is selfish will always think about his benefit only. Hence, he will ignore the needs and benefits of the team members and also of the company. This type of person will not bear any fruit for the company. There is no use in having this kind of a person as a leader.
  • Favouritism: A good leader should always treat all his team members equally. He should not always be in favour of his friend or his favourite team members. The other team members should not be ignored by him. Everyone from the team has equal rights and duties.
  • Irresponsibility: A leader should be responsible enough as the whole team is his responsibly. Any good or bad thing which happens in the group or due to his team, the leaders is the one who is held responsible. He should not run away from his responsibilities but should fulfil them in proper time.

What is the Importance of Leadership?

In today’s time, leadership is a very important quality which should be present in every individual. Every organization wants their employees to be good leaders. Good leaders can take the company to a new higher level. A good leader can guide the employees to work in the right direction. He motivates the employees to work hard in order to gain maximum profit. If the leader possesses excellent leadership qualities, it increases the effective work done by the team member. The team members will get to know how to work in the right way. Moreover, if they are happy with their leader, they will happily do their work which is more beneficial than the work done under stress, anger and tension. In the situations, when the employees have to work even after the office timings, they will not be stressed if their leader is good. They will be happy working under his guidance. There will be no problem for them if they even have to work for a little time after the office timing also. This eventually increases the work output of the employees and the profit of the company.

Leadership is very important in the field of business also. Let us take an example of a big shop with many workers. The shop owner must be a good leader. He should neither be too strict nor be too lenient. If the owner is too lenient with the workers, the workers will do whatever they want to do.  They will not do their work. When a customer comes, they may not attend him properly. It is the duty of the leader, which is the owner, to guide them properly in order to work in the right way. If the owner is too strict, that is he is very rude to the workers or makes them do overtime forcefully, just for his own benefit, he is not a good leader. The workers will leave the job and no one else will want to work in his shop. This justifies the need for leadership qualities in a shop owner. For his profit, he needs to lead his workers in a right way.

Even for a student, leadership is very important. A student is the rising sun of the country. He is the future of our nation. And a country always needs good leaders. A student has many career options. He may be a doctor, an engineer, pilot, designer, businessman, politician, police officer and the list continue endlessly. For all the professions, leadership qualities are a must today. A doctor has to lead a team of nurse, compounders, and interns also. A politician has to lead an area of the town, city, state or even the whole country. They have to be excellent leaders so that the country can prosper.  If they are planning to get a job in a company, they have to keep in mind that every company wants good leaders. They have to work on their leadership skill form the very beginning. Even during the personal interviews for a job, leadership skills are always checked.
